Yes avoidance of material will decreases distress short-term. That's not the question anyone working in mental health care is concerned with. The question about whether the state of mental healthcare means that we should facilitate avoidance as a long term solution in an interesting one, and I think that gets us into context debates.

I would argue that higher education becomes an area where, definitively, we should not facilitate it because it is standard for universities to provide mental healthcare services, especially trauma related, to students.

Actually reading through the author's Twitter they address this. Basically encouraging avoidance is always bad because prolonged exposure to triggers is good and is therapeutic in the long term.

I read it as the people in China are more upset about the stereotypes that the villains represent, even if they replaced the clearly offensive villain with a less offensive villain.

The thing about the hero being a Canadian-Chinese guy being offensive because he's "Western" is lol to me. He was born in China and his family emigrated to Canada.

Only when it comes to them. They are usually flippant when discussing discrimination that affects other people and don't care about their own government running concentration camps.

    China is bad.

Also kind of turns back on all the white people that are like "Look the Asians don't care about cultural sensitivity" (Ghost in the Shell, the Great Wall, etc.)

    China knows two things:

    1) Maintaining a strong national identity with the population is extremely important for the future of the Party
    2) The population doesn't give a fuck about Chinese censors and can easily access information outside the iron curtain

So when stuff like this comes out they pounce on it to try to mitigate the damage. It's modern authoritarianism for dummies, more or less.

North Carolina has reached a settlement over their bathroom bill where transgenders can now use the bathroom that matches their gender identity.

The agreement was reached between senior state officials and the plaintiffs, led by a transgender man named Joaquin Carcaño. The judge said the parties agree that nothing in a controversial state law "can be construed by the Executive Branch Defendants to prevent transgender people from lawfully using public facilities in accordance with their gender identity."

The settlement also states that any outstanding legal claims against the state officials by the plaintiffs, including the American Civil Liberties Union of North Carolina, are now dismissed. "We are thrilled to obtain some clarity and relief for transgender North Carolinians who have been suffering under HB 2 and HB 142 for years. While this part of the court fight may be ending, so much urgent work remains as long as people who are LGBTQ are denied basic protections from violence and discrimination simply because of who they are," said Irena Como, acting legal director of the ACLU of North Carolina. Lawmakers passed the original "bathroom bill," HB 2, in 2016 under Republican Gov. Pat McCrory. It required that public agencies clearly indicate that multiple occupancy restrooms, showers and changing areas in their buildings must be used according to the sex listed on a person's birth certificate. The bill drew intense backlash. That included pullouts from major businesses that, according to an estimate from The Associated Press, could have cost the state some $3.76 billion over the course of 12 years.

    Reagan was a filthy racist.

He made the comment in a 1971 telephone call with then-President Richard Nixon.

Mr Reagan, who was governor of California at the time, was angered that African delegates at the UN sided against the US in a vote.

Members of the Tanzanian delegation started dancing after the UN voted to recognize China and expel Taiwan.

Mr Reagan, who was a supporter of Taiwan, called the president the following day to express his apparent frustration.

He said: "To see those... monkeys from those African countries - damn them, they're still uncomfortable wearing shoes!"

Mr Nixon, who quit as president in 1974, can then be heard laughing.

The recording was unearthed by Tim Naftali, a clinical associate professor of history at New York University, who directed the Nixon Presidential Library from 2007 until 2011.

He published his findings in The Atlantic and wrote that the racist exchange was removed from the original tapes for privacy reasons.
At the time Nixon covered for Reagan by telling his secretary of state that Reagan called them cannibals.

    https://nextshark.com/blackface-shoot-pakistani-model/

Pakistani model does a blackface shoot. Gets called out. Says that she is colored and that she often has her skin lightened for shoots and that shoots in which her darkness is enhanced or emphasized should be no different because it is promoting darkness as beautiful.
