You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

She's Pakistani, and they can be very dark skinned. So she looks like a dark-skinned Pakistani to me. IDK on this one.

I'm not making a judgment on this one, but you can see her actual skin tone vs the skin tone in the photoshoot. They are NOT the same.

I don't know what to think about this. Is it really as bad as the critics are making it out to be? Who is it that is denouncing this? Is it African-Americans? Is she from Pakistan/still living in Pakistan? Do African-Americans, or African-British (that's a thing right) have the right to be upset over another person of color, in another country, putting on makeup to get a skin tone that they could probably get naturally by just tanning?

from what i've seen 99% of the time they're just called/refer to themselves as black or black Brits. i think in their census they distinguish between black African and black Caribbean but that's about as close as they get.

If that's correct, I find it interesting that we use African-American when elsewhere they find "black" to be perfectly acceptable. Fucking Americans.

I must be confused about what you're saying. She is pakistani but she doesn't look like a dark skinned pakistani to me.

Or did you mean in the photoshoot?

pretty sure most black people in America have no problem with black as an identifier.

    Sorry, that was poorly phrased.

When we're trying to be PC, we use African-American. I find it interesting that extra care may not be taken in the UK and they just use Black rather than "African-British" or some other form like I tried to guess at.

This has a history behind it. IIRC An advocate group decades ago pushed the whole "African American" phrasing to get ride colorism (black ). My memory is fuzzy on whether this came around the same time as Native American (vs. Indian) or if Native American gave the idea, but I think they happened around the same time.

The media latched onto it as a more PC way of referring to black people, and several blacks promoted it as they felt it represented their history, making it seem like this was the way to go.

Of course, it didn't take off well as it confused the fuck out of the rest of the world, since ya know, not every black person is American. And as well, not every black person feels associated with Africa (ie. Caribbeans).

As well, more blacks are becoming vocal that they don't even like or at least care about being called African American.

So more people are realizing saying black is ok.

In the photoshoot she looks like a dark skinned pakistani. I know that's not her real color. But what's the difference between that and getting a tan? I don't see her trying to look "black" but a darker Pakistani.

Just because black face is done very well doesnt mean its kosher lol. Its professionally done, amazing even, but it's still blackface.

Click the link if you haven't and look at her normal photo, she is closer to being white than black. Even if she tanned shed get nowhere near that tone or complexion. She would literally have to catch on fire for a min to reach that level of black. Its straight black face, trying to be done tastefully.

This post just reeks of someone who doesn't understand lighting and photography/post production/white balance how it can effect skin tone. Not only that but peoples complexion naturally changes depending on their body temperature and time of day. (Not a lot mind you but that effect can be exaggerated by photographic techniques.) I looked at the photos in the article and you cannot deduce her actual skin tone between those photographs. Even the "natural" probably isn't very close to her natural skin tone.

I presented it because it is an interesting case. It's not some random college kids being insensitive or purposefully offensive. She makes a good point about how this is about trying to increase the amount of dark skinned representation. And her response begs the question whether the make up is meant to make her look black like an African originated person or like a SEA originated dark person.

Bruh I'm not creeping thru her Instagram to conclude her exact skin tone. I'm looking at the news article linked and commenting that the model with no black face on, even with a strong tan, would never look like she does when shes wearing black face.

You guys are comparing this to a spray tan. This is not a spray tan. This is makeup to specifically make her look black. She can look completely natural, or even tanned natural, without having to go full faux melanin .
