It's been popular in some circles to slam lefties at least as early as 2015. The whole "gotta own the libs" memery didn't just pop up out of nowhere, after all. But sure, cancel culture, twitterati, blah blah.

I guess I should have clarified, popular in hollywood*
Now, let's connect the dots on how one insult comedian = Hollywood since I honestly couldn't get past the video citing Gervais as the #1 comedian AND actor.
I'm dying at all these people who want to call Gervais anything but a lefty because he made jokes about people paying him to make jokes about them, and ignoring like every other part of his career, sweet Christmas people are desperate and dumb.
Gervais does hate trans people though.

Americans have a hard time with British humour Gervais is an unrepentant trolly lad who would take the piss out of anyone for a giggle his comedy isn't the outpouring of some deep-seated ideology
But it's also absurd to call him a lefty, he's at best a bog-standard lib with some reactionary tendencies.
i too would like to murder those with peanut allergies on planes
But his jokes

I'm OOTL what does Gervais have against trans people?
he made a buncha transphobic jokes on Twitter then explicitly said he'll joke about cancer AIDS and the Holocaust because the more people he offends the funnier it is to him but people kept getting offended
i mean he's obviously being ironic but the point is the jokes are transphobic at face value
aka the whole shtick of irony
Yikes
Shawn Rosenberg's "People are too stupid for democracy to work, elites can't save us from ourselves anymore in the age of the internet so fascism is inevitable" paper getting mainstream attention this week

Personally not convinced we're not wired for democracy. Probably what I found most disconcerting about the link is that there was no real mention of education over the past decades as a potential cause of current ills. I think most of us would agree that a more ignorant population is easier to control, and when the public education system is scantly funded paired with college growing increasingly out of reach, the end result isn't so much that people are incapable of understanding issues, but that they can't due to lacking tools. Better understanding of the national climate also becomes more difficult if you're stuck working multiple low-paying jobs just to survive paycheck to paycheck. That may play into the immigrant narrative, sure, but we also can't pretend wealthy CEOs are good actors and that trickle down really works if we just give it more time and more tax breaks. Automation and shipping jobs out of the country are also playing their role.
Like, I can't help but just look back to the 80's and identify it as the beginning of this crisis. Of the 40 years, we only had 2 democrat presidents for 16 of those who had their hands tied by the GOP and often had to bog through inherited shit that conveniently became their fault for causing. Hammering that narrative again and again while people don't see the results they need in a timely manner and we get this regressive pendulum shift that violently reacts against any gains we tried to make. Perhaps a common thread could be found in that the elite fear losing power, and so money becoming a major problem in politics, but we also know it takes more than one legitimately smart and well-meaning person to get things done. Social media is certainly a more recent factor, but I'd otherwise say it only shines a light on what was already festering alongside the futility of even trying to point it out. I mean, imagine trying to convince those that don't think Trump is obstructing justice when they've already made up their mind it's a phony witch hunt despite a series of (re)actions by no means painting the image of an innocent man (exacerbated yet more with Mueller report findings), further banging the drum that the dems are the real criminals when all they've got on record is Bill pressuring an intern into a blowjob. I don't see an embracing of fascism so much as I do just a bunch of major yikes and maybe a hint of pity for those not realizing they're getting hoodwinked.
The unique difference that the paper points out is that beforehand there was enough control centralized in the elites to save us from ourselves. However now the ability of the internet and social media for us to form insular bubbles has torn down faith in the system. The fact that this is turning point is illustrated by how the left has become disillusioned from mainstream Democratic politics as well as the right's headlong plunge into populism. The difference is that the right is willing to go along with the establishment when Trump tells them to in order to "own the libs" whereas the left would rather self-immolate and write in Bernie or vote for Stein
