amazon gets around this 30% fee
It also got removed from Google Play, and I doubt 95% of Android users would pay for something they'd have to sideload.
Didn't that involve them basically making their own iteration of Android plus marketplace, or were you referring to something else?
It had be sideloaded or installed thru the Samsung Galaxy store for a couple years until Epic finally put it on Google Play.
As for Amazon, in exchange for finally being able to sell Apple Watches/TVs/etc on Amazon, Apple supposedly reduced their cut of Prime Video purchases down to 15% instead of 30%.
Amazon is on Google play and Apple store afaik, and they don't pay 30% on their sale to Apple. There is shenanigans where they cant sell Kindle stuff, but by and large apple gives them a pass for no reason other than they want to bend the rules to allow it

Well when it comes to Android your not locked out of the platform without the play store aa you can still install it from samsung or an apk. Apple though lock down ios so 3rd parties cant install unless the phones jailbroken. They might not beat google but apple might be on shakier ground. Alternatively this could be epic throwing down by saying stop looking for a disproportionate cut of our sales or we give you legal hell.
Yo epic is not the good guy here there is some real info on reddit about how bad every player in this is. Fuck em all really.
Everything revolves around shitty closed ecosystem practices and apple is probably fine legally but just in principle they really suck ass and I see zero problem in letting them fight this one out for however long they have to.

I actually think they have a stronger case against Google. Epic apparently tried to work with manufacturers like LG to pre-install Epic Games but they couldn’t because of LG’s agreement with Epic.

Idk, I think Epic is kinda good guy. Maybe by principle, but the whole trying to sic their fan base of children on Apple/Google is kinda shitty.
No company is the good guy in any scenario like this, they're all just trying to make more money.
You don’t think you can benefit from a more open device or possibly cheaper in app purchases? Not saying I’m going to picket for Epic, but I’m kinda glad there is some force going after the super big tech companies because Anti-trust in this country is so fucked.
If you're rooting for either company youre silly. I want the outcome where "epic wins", but not cause i want epic to win but cause on net I really do think it would be better for the industry as a whole. Apple isn't going to leave money on the table tho so they gotta be forced to make bottom line changes like this.

I'd say this one of those shocked Pikachu situations but I doubt any part of this response from apple is any kind of a surprise to Epic. They explicitly broke the terms and publicly announced they were doing so
I don’t follow the distinction between “Rooting for a company” versus “I want the outcome where “epic wins”. I want Epic and Spotify to pursue litigation versus Apple because that’s the only way antitrust will be addressed/changed. Congress isn’t going to touch antitrust anytime soon, so the only avenue we have is for a corporate overlord to push the issue.
What I'm saying is I like antitrust things to be resolved in ways that benefit me as a consumer, but im not disillusioned into thinking epic games is doing this for any altruistic reasoning

i.e. 12 year olds plz go cry on Twitter about this
Sounds like Epic doesn't have any legal way to stop Apple from doing it, so they're appealing to the court's emotion. "Apple will hurt our rep by doing the thing they're more than allowed to do based on the contract we signed, and that's sad."
