It's very reminiscent of souls games, but they changed enough to make it fresh. The core gameplay of resting and enemies respawning is there, but there is no more stamina, and its replaced with posture which is like a pseudo health bar where you're hitting, dodging, and parrying to break your enemies posture and maintain your own. It's not hard persay, especially one on one, but if you're outnumbered there arent enough I-frames to save you.

My only qualm is the map system is pretty much useless, so you're as lost as souls games unless you look up shit or just spend hours running around figuring it out. That's the least fun part for me, but the gameplay is a blast.

I think it's that because death is punishing, you have every incentive to hide during alerts and try to stealth kill everyone, which is much more annoying than just creeping shield-up like in DS.

I played DS1 and got through the first three bosses I believe with little issue but I kept getting ganked by normal enemies and shit wasn’t fun to me to I played Shadow of Mordor instead where I was an orc killing god.

I play for two reasons, coop with my wife (there's a shortage of PC games we can play together and enjoy, destiny, Monster Hunter and Elite Dangerous are about it) and PVP. I don't play overwatch anymore, codblops aren't my kind of games, Warframe is a buggy dumpster fire. I'm Diablo 3'd the fuck out.

DMC5 is like a love letter to fans everywhere. Beautiful free flowing battle system that lets me do what I feel like doing against legitimate difficulty. Meanwhile Soulsborne games is all about memorization because they can't be bothered to be creative.
