You could do this (although most college students are allowed to vote in the local elections where they are going to college) but it would certainly be much harder to administer - getting each prisoner access to a ballot from their hometown.

I actually hadn't thought about how they would physically vote - would there be a polling place set up inside the prison or would it all be vote-by-mail or whatever? Do all municipalities even allow absentee balloting?

If there's one thing I know about politicians, it's that they love campaigning for the votes of criminals! Super good for their image, they love it.

    Could be weird.
I’m not as politically savvy as the rest of you guys, but I’d also assume this becomes a very much welcome change to private for profit prisons who can control every single aspect of media the prisoners can indulge in.

You basically turn the entire penitentiary into an indoctrination camp for the highest bidder for lobbyists to push.

We struggle constantly with what ideal our prison system is supposed to uphold. We pay lip service constantly to the idea of reformation but we take no steps to ensure the system has even a snowball's chance in hell.

I'd like the goal to be reformation but the reality is that the system is mostly punitive, and the problems with the criminal justice system make me hesitant to to think that any benefit is gained by stacking the deck more against convicted persons.

i doubt any candidate stans hard for giving the incarcerated voting rights, but restoring them to citizens with past convictions has massive support, usually 65-75%+ in states like Florida and Iowa and Mississippi that have taken up the issue recently at the state level.

Yeah, how the prisoners could be informed voters in our democracy is a challenge, and they are a population ripe for coercion and election fuckery (both by other prisoners and especially by the staff).

obviously he supports the position, that is what started this entire conversation, but getting hit with a gotcha question at a town hall and then firing a tweet-riposte at Lindsey Graham i do not think qualifies as making it a significant part of the plank.

maybe he'll be led by the nose by his opponents to consistently reembrace what they believe is an unpopular position, or he'll see it as an opportunity to make inroads among the minority communities that doomed his past candidacy, but i kinda doubt it gets too much traction beyond a couple days of media buzz in the April before the April of the election year.

Also that's only a white supremacist talking point because they choose to use percentages instead of raw numbers that demonstrate far, far more white people are actually getting arrested but somehow only the melanin-rich end up incarcerated in great numbers.
