    https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Whills_(community)
In the 2018 book James Cameron's Story of Science Fiction, Star Wars creator George Lucas explained that he intended the Whills to be microbiotic beings who fed off the Force and controlled the entire universe. They were capable of creating certain destinies for people, such as the Chosen One prophecy. In fact, all living things were only vessels for the Whills to travel around in, and the midi-chlorians (first introduced in the 1999 film Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace) served as a conduit between the vessels and the Whills. It could be said that, in a general sense, the Whills were the Force itself.[7]

Had Lucas held onto Lucasfilm Ltd. instead of selling it to The Walt Disney Company in 2012, the sequel trilogy would have featured the microbiotic world of the Whills. Lucas is sure, however, that much like The Phantom Menace, some fans would have hated his idea just like they hated the prequel trilogy, though at least the story from the beginning to the end would have been told.[7]

Imo, it stands as a pillar of what happens when a franchise extends too long. From 1979-2019 is a long ass time for anything to try and remain coherent with so much of the world changing. Whether its creative control, audience expectations, world view, nostalgia, fanbase, media and so on. If each subsequent entry had been a stand alone trilogy I think overall things would have been better received and less critically dissected.

I don't think you can make a sweeping statement like that because, while this movie was bad, The Mandalorian has been exceptional.

The biggest weakness of this trilogy was that they didn't have a cohesive (or any?) idea of where it was going from the start. Having a director come in for the middle film to 'subvert expectations' and then another director come in for the last film who threw most of that out just put a spotlight on this flaw.

It didn't help we've seen a long-running narrative with many different directors be incredibly successful in the MCU.

That's because they had a plan with the MCU.

Oh, well I meant mainly "Star Wars" as the movie Skywalker saga. Or whatever its being referred to.

Kathleen Kennedy out here trying to say Palpatine was always the plan and Colin Treverow was like nah he was never part of my movie that was all JJ. And Ian McDiarmid was like “I only found out a few months before shooting.” So somebody is being a liar liar pants on fire and I’m betting it’s Kennedy.

My guess is that palpatine was an emergency backup in case they needed something to tease the fan boys with. If TLJ didn't suck, he wouldn't have been in.

No idea how she comes out of all this still with a job. The Star Wars franchise has always sucked to those who weren’t bound by nostalgia, and now she’s confirmed it to those would be new fans.

Didn't this have a worse opening weekend than TFA and TLJ?

Yeah, still did 180 million and already busted 500 million. So it only printed some of the money, just not all of the money.

Hate to say it but JJ fucked this movie over the second he decided to go full fan service and let reddit write it. It's just an incoherent mess.

People act like RJ made a movie with no oversight by anyone. They signed off on his movie.

There were better places they could have gone at the end of TLJ though than this.
