[SPOILERS] Star Wars: Episode IX: The Rise of Spoilers

I disagree -- The prequels focused way too much on the relationship between Anakin and Padme to the detriment of Anakin's fall to the dark side. I think there's like one line in Episode 2 that suggests Anakin believes in the ideas behind the Empire. One of the biggest issues with the prequels is that it doesn't feel like Anakin joins the dark side because he believes in it or disagrees with the Jedi, it feels like he joins to save Padme (which doesn't work, so why does he stay with the dark side?). There's the line during his fight with Obi-Wan where he says in his eyes the Jedi is evil, but apart from not appointing him as a Jedi master, we're never given any reason why he would think that.

That said, Clone Wars remedies a lot of the problems with the prequels. We finally get to see Anakin's darker personality, we get to actually see the bond between Anakin and Obi-Wan which makes the 'you were my brother' line make sense, we get to see some of the failings of the Jedi, etc (there still really isn't a lot to justify the Jedi are Evil line though..).

Episode I and II focused too much on politics and the "romance" in episode II was cringe worthy. Palpatine's Master Plan was somewhat straight forward by playing/controlling both sides to start a war while boosting his position in the senate and allowing the Jedi's to trust the clone army before Order 66 was executed and have the Jedi blamed for a false coup. But I think they should've downplayed a lot of the politics and focused more on the characters. My own thoughts on the prequels is that Padme should've be played by a younger actress in Episode I with her and Anakin being childhood friends. Darth Maul (very under utilized) should have been kept thru Episode II, and had a scene similar to Episode 3 with Dooku where Anakin disposes of him at Palpatines suggestion.

As far as Anakin's turn to the Dark Side, I felt it was more about how the Jedi Council kept holding him back because he thought he was ready to become a Master and they kept denying him. Palpatine manipulated his thinking (it was already clouded by his mothers death and possible Padme's death) so that he was easily turned. Anakin was head strong and had an inflated ego. He saved Obi Wan multiple times so he had already felt he was better/stronger than him, and Palpatine feed that ego causing him to distrust the Jedi Council thinking that they were afraid of him. So there are threads there about Anakin's distrust towards the council but the dialog when he submits to Palpatine makes it all about saving Padme so it become a giant mess.

I really like Adam Driver, he was probably the best new actor cast in this trilogy. I read he has this thing where he can’t stand to watch or listen back on any of his performances and he sat through the premiere of TFA and almost had a panic attack. His TED Talk where he spoke about going from the marines to acting was pretty cool too.

There’s a Reddit post from a supposed “inside source” basically saying Disney execs forced JJ to make sweeping cuts and changes to the film that he did not agree with and some of these points seem very outlandish including:

Poe/Finn didn’t happen because China is racist and homophobic

The Rey scene at the end was supposed to be Force ghosts with all the original actors there (the source says it was filmed and all actors were in the scene in full costume) but they used voices instead because China doesn’t allow ghosts in movies lol

I find a lot of the shit hard to believe but it’s interesting regardless and I think there are probably a few kernels or truth sprinkled in.

Ghosts and homosexuality aren't allowed if you're filming in China. Disney could have included them in the movie if they wanted, since I'm fairly sure the movie wasn't filmed there, they just wanted more appeal for the Chinese market.

The great irony is Star Wars does terrible in China because it was never released there until recently so it doesn’t have any cultural significance there as it does in other places. Ip Man 4 is absolutely demolishing TROS in the Chinese box office right now.
