TLJ was better than all of the original movies and RJ should’ve been allowed to stay on and finish his story.
So I rewatched The Last Jedi for the first time after seeing TROS. I think now knowing how story threads end has made me much less critical of TLJ. There are certain things about it that I still think are very flawed (the entire casino planet sub plot, the disappointing end for Phasma, Rose, etc) but now having a definitive answer for Rey’s parentage, Snoke’s identity, Luke realizing his behavior was wrong etc being cleared up makes the film more enjoyable imo. So I think now with perspective of having finished the saga I think I won’t look back at TLJ in such a negative light as I previously did.
Really enjoyed ROS despite expecting mediocrity. I think the RLM criticism is accurate that they are basically throwing so much shit at you that you don't have time to stop and think about it. It makes me lament how good the trilogy could've been with a talented writer for all three films, unconstrained by Disney, and JJ directing all three.
I find the pro-TLJ takes to be fascinating because I think it's an unredeemable abomination. I guess it speaks to which sins don't bother some people. It doesn't need to be rehashed but I'd summarize it's terribleness as: bizarre atonal humor, weak characters (Holdo, Rose, 'DJ', etc), generally incoherent writing, and deus ex Holdo maneuver)

I dont like the side cast in TLJ, and casino aside, the main cast and plot were all amazing imo.
Rose is irredeemable tho

What exactly about the main plot was amazing? It was a glorified white bronco space chase.
Movies with Mikey has a great take on TLJ. It's still a film I'd watch again (and plan too, currently watching it all in story order) and dont condemn at all. Watching the first 2 episodes so far, Luke said it best in fucking TLJ, history has made them gods when in reality they are just losers and failures. Least we forget, it only took 1 Sith lord and a bunch of apprentices to take out hundreds of Jedi Masters and apprentices.

Rey isnt some destined child and is a nobody trying to do good, the fallout of ben killing han and the pain it caused him, followed by the throne scene. All the Luke scenes were amazing. The casino scene sucked, the holdo maneuver was great visually even if done a little campy.

The theme they were going for with rose I get, but it was executed poorly on many fronts. Biggest imo is shes such a weak actress in her scenes.

One of my big issues with RoS (and reactions to it) is, you can't criticize Johnson for disregarding expectations because he 'wanted to tell his story' and give Abrams a pass for essentially doing the same thing -- except worse, because he disregarded events, not expectations.
Making Rey a Palpatine was one of the big ones, but there are others.
Her being a Palpatine was such a fucking snooze.
i don't want to sound dramatic but The Last Jedi is the worst movie ever made and if you like it you probably would have voted Hitler for Chancellor
I remember being in the theater and watching and being like "Ok, this Poe/Hux thing is silly but whatever, cool bombing sequence."
Ok here comes Kylo Ren to fuck shit up in his TIE. Oh shit, he senses his mom, Leia! Oh shit he just fucking killed her! NOOOO!!! Oh man, this is the way Leia goes out in the trilogy. Ok, not bad I can deal. This death is pretty good, and shes dead irl so I get it.
Then the whole NO SHES NOT REALLY DEAD! EXPECTATIONS SUBVERTED! I remember saying what the fuck out loud in the theater when she force pulls or whatever the fuck that was back to the airlock. From that point on, that movie was pure and utter garbage and forever irredeemable in my eyes
Probably posted already, but I thought it was funny. Dominic Monaghan was able to be in the film because of a bet:

There were a few times where I just said, “You know how much I love those films; I’d love to be in it.” And J.J. was like, “Of course, I know. We’ll see what happens.” And then, England was in the soccer World Cup, which would’ve been 2018. We were in a knockout game with Colombia, and playfully, J.J. said, “If you guys win that game, you’ve got a part. If you don’t win it, then I’m going to have to give it to someone else.” I knew he was kind of joking and having fun with it. Thankfully, it all worked out because it was the first time in England’s history that we beat a team in a penalty shootout of a World Cup final.
Yall cant complain about Leia in TLJ and not go wtf at her dying to force projection just to say her son's name, causing him to undo two movies of being a dick and suddenly becoming a good guy.

This is something that is being heavily debated amongst my friends and I. I am in the camp that it went from Rey being a skywalker > nothing >okthenlolPalpatine
Friends (and hubby) think that she was supposed to be a Palpatine all along. They insist that Disney Execs had to approve of all this and probably wouldn't have accepted a rando back n' forth.
Considering the care in the MCU I am surprised a back and forth such as this slipped under Disney's radar. No matter the situation, the pacing was off. It's possible Johnson didn't want to reveal it in the second film because it would be to parallel to Empire's reveal, but by doing so he left the plot a mess.
