They tried something like this on Microsoft Office. It is available standalone without subscription but expensive, has no discount policy and very restricted in terms of the number of users and extra features, No mobile support either(big, big disadvantage). Office 365 (the subscription) on the other hand is installable on multiple machines, mobile devices and has all other perks in it.
They kept single license available but subscription is heavily encouraged. I’d say on games they could simply keep the price high with no or very little discount policy and actively encourage gamepass.
Well this console generating will be wild. I’m expecting Sony to spend more on timed exclusives. I don’t see Sony with cash reserve to buy SE or Capcom.
Of course if Sony can buy SE or Capcom that would be wild lol.
people are apparently demanding Sony buy Konami in response lol

Sony actually has a good purchasing strategy. They buy studios when they are small but promising, support, grow them and create a solid exclusive base. They also maintain good relationships with key developers.
Buying Konami...don’t see much point other than piss contest really. Microsoft move was smart, definitely a solid step in competition for them but won’t work for Sony.
It's not like Konami is doing shit with their own IPs anyways
Cause video games print money if you got the stacks to make em.
I can totally believe a "free" on xbox, $70 on playstation setup tho. No way they leave elder scrolls money on the table cause they won't sell the game on Sony or Nintendo consoles.

God of War, Spider-Man, Last of Us, Uncharted and plenty of other Sony exclusives would make mad money if they released it on other platforms. Yet here we are.
Unless Sony let's Gamepass come to Playstation consoles I don't see Microsoft releasing future Zenimax games on the PS5
A bit early to say, time will tell I suppose. Their core strategy differs a lot and Microsoft probably won’t challenge Sony at the point where Sony is the strongest. You can buy Bethesda, maybe another studio but it has to end somewhere. You can’t grow by overpaying established, profitable studios and force exclusivity.
Sony’s strategy is focused on exclusivity and from what I can tell, Microsoft seems to be aiming for profitability through subscription services. Use gamepass card to boost Xbox sales and sell games for $70 on other consoles.
Microsoft’s most profitable line of business is Office. And for a long time now one of the most profitable, popular software for Apple Macintosh is...yep, guessed right, Microsoft Office.
Clouds services is Microsoft's biggest cash cow right now actually.
Same story with Amazon, cloud services fucking print bookoo bucks
Sold out in Australia in minutes.
I'll be really curious to see the split between the S and the X, because the S is a compelling option even for people opting to go with a PS5. $299 1440p gamepass machine is a hard bargain to beat.
I wasn't really planning to get an X or S, but I need a new controller and I'm pretty much in for Gamepass anyways. If I trade in my current xbox I'm barely paying any more for the S. I can't think of a good reason why not.
Sitting in line at my closest GameStop. They have a sign that says they have 4 X and 2 S total available. Store opens in 1.5 hours and I’m the only person here.
