In HS this Army recruiter really bugged me about signing up. I actually thought about it. I had this silly notion that my skinny ass could make it in the 75th Ranger Regement (that's special ops and I thought the Rangers were cool as hell) I have multiple family members who have served in the military. I kinda bought into that whole, money for college, gives job experience spiel. In hindsight I'm glad I didn't. I would have been fine with being sent to Afghanistan with the mindset I had back then but after that.. no. Invading Iraq again, bullying other countries. If people want to join the military that's fine but you are just tools to serve a bunch of wealthy, powerful, fascists. I couldn't find much honor in it anymore.

Oh, and I found out some time later that having Crohns disease disqualifies you from any military service.

Army recruiters at my HS showed up with Nintendo light guns and a Super Scope to simulate the battlefield.

When I turned 18, I learned Ritalin was a disqualification for military service. Had i only dropped the med sooner, I had a nepotism in for the Air Force space program in Texas.

Had an uncle that was in a similar situation and was allowed to fly bombers in addition to cargo. But that was late 70s / early 80s.

Heavy bombers were sort of on the way out at the time, and supersonic strategic bombers like the F-111 seemed like the way things would go. But either way, I wanted to be a fighter pilot, and once I realized that wasn't going to be possible, I decided that it wasn't for me, lol. My grandfather, who served in the US Army Air Corps during WWII, also died right before I started high school, so that took a bit of the wind out of my sails as well.

Ya, they had recruiters at my school too but as a dumpy little fat kid I wasn’t much of a chase and I never wanted to join anyway lol.

Think as an adult most of us realize that too many servicemembers die in pointless wars to make rich people more money, but that’s probably why they hang out at high schools looking preying on kids who don’t know better.

Not using the GI Bill or stuff like tuition assistance isn't something to blame on the government. They're amazing programs that a lot of people just don't take advantage of.

Edit: when I was, I thought about going into OSI in the Air Force but ultimately decided I hated moving around when I'm told to.

I didn't say why they don't use it, only that the reason exists and isn't used.

College sounds great until you spend a couple years out of highschool and don't want to go back to school. It's a bit of a con. It's exactly like mail-in rebates. They know no one is going to do that shit. You buy it, and you put the receipt in the junk drawer and forget about it.

They spend your entire school years telling you you have to get a degree you have to go to college, how are you going to afford it.

I DID use mine, however, my degree(s) cost a lot more than the tiny part that was free. There's more to the con than just college though. Housing, insurance/healthcare, job prospects.

Oh I wouldn't be looking to move cuz of the draft that won't happen.

It's just a long term plan I've thought about for a while to just move to a country with better healthcare, etc in my older age.

Looking back I probably should have done my 2-3 years in Air Force my ROTC recruiter was begging me to do instead of working minimum wage jobs and fucking around in FFXI between 18-21, I would have started college at the same time anyway and at least would have had it paid for.

I didn't enlist until I was 25, but I know for a fact I probably wouldn't have survived the first few years if I got in right at 18 considering I barely remember my college years because of all the partying.

Honestly way too many of these young boys just aren't mature enough for that kind of commitment. Some come out just fine, many of them fall into debt or bankruptcy when they have so many opportunities just given to them for no reason other than they did a menial job for the military.
