I guess the argument is that if he isn't excoriating the administration he's complicit? I get the viewpoint but the point he's trying to make (as I see it) is he feels he would be undermining the national defense. Literally everything this guy has ever done or said has been in from the perspective of defending the US so I have no reason to suddenly believe he's trying to be political now.

If there really are crucial security operations that could be disrupted by him speaking out against Trump directly, then I stand behind his point completely. Trump going after people connected to his enemies is documented fact.

There has to be a point where the people that are still behind the scenes doing everything they can to hold this clusterfuck together are left alone. They don't want anyone to know who they are and neither do I.

Mattis worked within the Trump Admin to do stuff like using the Mother-of-all-Bombs in Afghanistan and moving the military to the border to stop illegal immigrations but he's tried everything to stop the Trump admin of doing any extremely bad ok sounds logical.
