Guatemala - 77.2% denied out of 8,540 (2011-2016)
Honduras - 80.3% denied out 7,350 (2011-2016)

There is a ~40% difference in change of getting approved if you have an attorney. The problem being of course that lawyers cost money and these people have none, and there is not enough pro bono or non-profits to serve everyone.

What is the successful argument for those who receive asylum?

I imagine it's just that the lawyers know how what minimum burdens that someone has to meet in order to qualify and do a better job of illustrating that rather than when these people are allowed to fend for themselves.

There's also disparate approval rates depending on where the person gets their case. Atlanta has a 90% rejection rate, New York has a 75% approval rate...
