The last unofficial player census recorded 1m active characters and FFXI's peak sub count was 650,000

I'd be willing to make a bet FFXIV's got a larger sub base right now than FFXI did in its peak but its not by factor of anything. Of course we'd know for sure if only they were willing to talk sub counts but ain't nobody ever gonna do that with a shrinking subscription base for the MMORPG market.
Doesn't help that making a character on the Data Center I'm on is getting stupid hard. Damn servers are getting packed now.
Didnt ff14 recently say they had 16million subs?

It's no OG WoW but I'm pretty sure its insanely more popular than 11 was

The metric Squeenix publically calls out is accounts made. If FFXIV had 16 million subs we'd have 20 fucking data centers or some shit.
Checking player activity is far more accurate but it also can't take in people like me running multiple characters or people logging in during a free weekend/week. The lucky bancho data excludes characters <Lv35 so no trial characters pop up on it.
Peak wow had 10m subscribers or something insane.
Can...can you make a new account without a separate sub?

I honestly have no clue what the answer is

I honestly think they're just calling out this

Right, which is why when they claim they have 16million subs, I take that as 16 million accounts being paid for. I doubt that's 16 million unique players cause of alts and shit, but regardless I dont think ffxi ever came close to 16 million.

So if they have 16M accounts made wouldn't that be 16M subs?
Or am I whooshing?
I might be misremembering the interview on giant bomb with the SE rep, but ffxiv is straight chillin right now with how they turned that game around since launch.
