Justin Williams having had a pretty successful and long career aside, seeing this not too long after the Andrew Luck early retirement stuff from a week or so ago (which was also followed up by that Gronk clip too), I can see a trend of athletes in sports that are incredibly physically rigorous starting to put more and more emphasis on physical and mental health more and more above "team first, have to play every game/season/whatever for as long as possible". Which I don't think is a bad thing.

Waaaaay more than enough examples of athletes putting their mental or full physical health too low on the list of their priorities and it ending very badly.

No idea who the last doode is, but looking at his stats, seems like a perennial AHL'er. DSP is the only one I'm actually kind of optimistic about. He was great depth for the Caps in their cup run. Rinaldo is the goonest of goons and always did something to fuck with the Flames whenever he played us.... actually, the thought of him, Tkachuk and Lucic on the same team is kind of funny >_>

Rieder is all sorts of meh.

Edit: We have Andrew McDonald as well for another PTO. Him I can see us signing as a 7th defenseman with the buyout of Stone and with Valimaki being injured, barring any trades between now and the start of the season.

-Still have all our top scoring guys on our top 2 lines as well as our top scoring defencemen (including our 5 guys who were all above or close to 1PPG, 2 having 20+ goal seasons, 3 having 30+ goal seasons)
-Have space in the roster for our youth to earn a spot (and there are like 4 or 5 guys both offence and defence who are ready to make the leap)
-Got rid of a guy who scored 7 goals and was benched in the playoffs for a guy who can actually slot into the depth 3rd line role and be productive where the first guy wasn't
-Gave PTO's to a bunch of people to fill out our AHL roster and potentially be a 12th or 13th forward

Yep. Totally dumping all our skill for grit.

I mean, you can make the argument that the Neal for Lucic trade was bad for Calgary, but Neal just wasn't working on the top lines here. And with how good Johnny-Mony-Zebu were on the top line together, there's no way Neal was going to get a 1st line spot outside of the occasional shift. Lucic on the other hand can slot in nicely on the 3rd line where Neal was. Bring a physical presence, not expected to be a leader in the locker room, doesn't have to produce top guy points, he can just come in and play hockey with a lot less pressure then he had in Edmonton.

On paper the trade looks bad for Calgary, but as far as roles and a fit in the roster goes, it actually makes a lot of sense. And yeah, all these PTO guys, one or two might get AHL spots, one will probably be the 13th forward and watch from the rafters most nights and yeah, that's it.
