Another reporter has been arrested by ICE for covering ICE arrests. The reporter is of Columbian decent and is in the country legally. She has an active green card application, an appeal for political asylum, and a valid work permit. ICE and DHS say that isn't enough to legally stay within the US.

DHS has fined a man $1.8M for not self deporting.

“It is ordered that a civil penalty be imposed upon you in the amount of $1,820,352,” Catala said.

The man is not being identified currently because he is terrified of potential retaliation against his case.

“My client came to the U.S. in the early 80s fleeing the Vietnam War. They came as refugees from Vietnam and they settled in the United States,” Catala said. “So he was only 5 years old when he came, and he’s in his late 40s now.”

He was issued a final order of removal in 2007, but Vietnam doesn’t grant passports to refugees.

“He does have a removal order, but he cannot leave,” Catala said. “So he does have work permits and he is in the United States legally. He has had regular check-ins annually.”

Legally, this has been part of immigration law since 1996, but it was rarely used until the Trump admin amended the law in June 2025 to make it easier to hand them out.
