FFXIV EX/Ultimate boss fight content is not good because every one of them boils down to some version of "stand here or die" in a circular arena.

A more advanced MMORPG boss battle system should make use of a combination of DPS/Heal/Tank checks, positioning for different roles, terrain, and using specific battle actions at the appropriate times. And you shouldn't have to memorize an exact pattern to pull it off while starting over from scratch every single time one person on your team gets it wrong and therefore throws the whole fight off. These fights should feel like fights, not dances. FFXI's bosses are much more enjoyable than XIVs.

anyways yeah for the most part I agree, around Stormblood the devs decided boss fights should be more spectacle than much else, and to their credit they are a nice spectacle, but there isn’t a whole lot of strategy involved. Dawntrail raids and trials have a bit more challenge and a little more nuance to them, actually a small handful of “whoa I’ve never seen THAT before in XIV” but we’re still in the expansion launch honeymoon phase right now, after a few patch cycles the novelty may wear off

Add management, too; there's barely any of that in XIV.

I probably wouldn't mind quite so much if not for the inability to recover mid-fight if anything goes wrong. Having to start from scratch every time means that gear and skill are secondary to rote memorization of patterns, basically making the fights 20-minute long QTEs. Surviving a near-wipe and crawling out of the wreckage to come back for the win was such an exhilarating part of XI.

Honestly peak MMO raid fights was pre nerf sunwell in Burning Crusade. That raid had a huge body count of broken guilds before the nerfed the ever loving shit out of it.
