i started reading the divine comedy. hadn't yet, fiancee thought i might like it.

story is fine, when i can parse wtf is going on. but not gonna lie, i'm really struggling with the archaic language. and i'm not a huge fan of poetry, so the format doesnt help.

it only re-affirms my dislike for the literary analysis portion of my creative writing class, though. only a few weeks in but it feels pretentious as fuck.

sounds like a problem with the translation. it was written in an early 14th century Italian dialect that is extremely difficult for even modern Italian speakers to decipher and some English translators take the approach that the more high falutin and archaic and formal and bastardized Shakespearean it sounds the closer it is to the original archaic Italian, which is, of course, absurd. whose are you reading by the by? it's a brilliant work of art and as you can see there's no lack of options.

might want to read some excerpts from the more modern fellows and see if it lands a little cleaner. i know when i'm going to an older work i spend half the damn day pouring over translators and the majority of them are utter rubbish.
