I've always found it confusing when talking about Jews, why someone that isn't religious would want to claim to be Jewish when generally it has such a strong religious tie in. Care to elaborate?

My interest was piqued so I looked into it more. I'm honestly surprised that European genes are so dominant considering a similar origin for Haitians, but Haitians' genes are predominantly African it seems.

The overall genetic makeup of the Dominican Republic's population is estimated to be approximately 60% Caucasian/European, 30% Black African, and 10% Native American on average according to recent genealogical DNA testing

I'm Ashkenazi, it mostly describes white/Slavic/Eastern European Jews. Sephardic means those with their roots in Spain/Iberia, Mizrahl are Middle Eastern/North African Jews. I think there's another but I'd have to look it up.

The main differences are more linguistic than cultural, though I'm pretty sure linguistic differences led to translation differences led to practice differences but I've never been to a Sephardic or Mizrahl service.

There's a difference between having your identity to be questioned for not being enough of a certain metric vs. Using that identity as an in to reject and disparage your culture and others.

Example: a gay guy being told he's not gay enough because he doesn't go to drag shows or as a poor attempt at an attack vs. A gay guy who hates being associated with queer people in general and allows str8s to disparage and mock or harass those that are openly gay. Or letting straight people openly use slurs towards gay people. Or using your culture to get a quick laugh out of people who know nothing of the context in which the joke was made.
