You questioned that he only got the deal after he started protesting. He was offered the deal in the 2016 post season (Feb-July?) Idk I dont watch football. He started protesting in the preason if 2016 i.e. end of summer 2016.
So he was offered the deal before the protests which answers your first post I quoted and also which AG was replying to.

Also there are way worse QBs that still had jobs. He was blackballed by the owners.
