Bear in mind, if you frequently say "you dont need that" to them when they want a new toy, then your count doesnt apply, but the fact that you have to frequently tell them "you dont need that" means whatever they previously liked isnt good enough and fancy something else.

3 year olds have some understanding of gender, yes.

What a 3 year old thinks isn't relevant to a parent's course of action, puberty is a long ways off at that point, you have plenty of time to see how the child develops.
