Can start by talking to the proprietor of your local wine store. Mine is very willing to help pick out wines to pair with food, or just nice to drink, at various price ranges.

Matching beers with whiskey is a bad time.

Friends of mine get one of those wine crate things for Christmas from a family member every year. Was always nice when they showed up to our ski trips with a case of wine.

I was into it big time from like '06-'12, weekly tasting in our "Young Winos of LA" group, was trying like 500 bottles a year.

Also in Santa Barbara there's a bunch of wine tasting rooms from different vineyards, if you want to learn go there when it's not busy, buy a tasting flight (like $10) and talk to the people pouring.
