You're nuts if you think every successful research academic is there because they knew wtf they wanted to do when they went into college. It's a stupid as shit sentiment and you should feel bad for having it.

GF was undeclared for 2 years and now works in a DoD lab with her PhD in applied math. People who are going to waste their lives are going to waste their lives no matter what. Thinking that 18 year-olds should have direction is some smoothbrain shit.

Wouldn't have anyone doing statistics about whether or not higher education is worth it in America if directionless 18 year-olds didn't stumble into random economics and math departments by accident bruh

As previously stated. Having the piece of paper definitely opens doors and starts connections as that's the American expectation currently but it has little to do with what you learned or experienced while amassing your mountain of debt

I wonder if there's some sort of statistic about the wage ranges for high school diploma, bachelor, master and doctorate. I wonder if these studies also cover growth rate of wages. If only there were some way for me to look for this information.

I didn't say it was fair man, it's the harsh truth though.

Also I feel like college focuses less on those things and more on how to apply yourself, feel like we had very different college experiences. Most of my classes had virtually no group projects. Seems like a high school thing
