What happens when the critics start to go after the less known and successful comics like the Ari Shafeers and Theo Von’s of the world?
They once tried to go after Joey Diaz and the only reason it didn’t turn into a bigger deal was cuz Rogan used his influence to tell them to fuck off. Not everyone has that kind of top cover.
Comedy is at an all time great right now, but there’s definitely a loud minority that wants to stifle it. And not all comics have the luxury of millions of dollars behind them and/or friends in high places.
I should’ve said when critics/social media.
i mean you have Anthony Jeselnik and Jim Jeffries (both of whom i dig) and a dozen others coming up through the traditional comedy club circuit ---> standup special route joking about raping women and infanticide and everything else and people pretend comedians are more limited in their expression, that the all-powerful critical establishment stifles non-conformist voices? get real fam comedians have never been more raunchy and offensive and it sells.
I never said comedians now feel limited lol. They’re more free/freer(?) than ever to do whatever style of comedy they want because it’s too easy to connect directly with their fans and ignore the haters.
My point is that theres very much a culture of wanting to attack them when they say a faggot joke when they’ve always been a fan of their nigger jokes.
Incidentally
somehow Louis CK got away with saying both faggot and nigger all he liked
no wonder the dude started jerking off in front of women man thought he was bulletproof
Forget about Chappelle and his peers. They’re established and can do whatever the fuck they want.
Do networks and/or casting directors now hesitate to pick up a guy who’s fucking hilarious and has been on the comedy circuit for quite a bit because they don’t want to offend certain demographics? Should the guy be forever held down with that glass ceiling now?
That shit is very real and theres quite a few stories from comics about this same scenario. Paul Mooney is the most famous one off the top of my head.

There was a gay dude on Adam Corrallas podcast awhile back. I wish I could remember his name, but he told a story how it was a struggle to get as special cuz his jokes were too gay lol. This was long before Netflix was handing them out to everyone.
