You can absolutely solo content that was popular in the 75 era, both of which encompass what I was referring to as "coming back and doing the same shit you used to do with your ls". Not the new XI endgame content, but the old stuff that isn't a challenge anymore. This is supposed to be an argument for why classic might fly, and "going back and having the same or very similar experience to 2006-2010" is the argument I was making. Same content, same way of leveling, but as someone else said, endgame is already completely figured out so all you gotta do is enjoy the game and not stress too much about how to beat stuff. I really meant what I said by "come back and have the same experience they did in 2006, or 2008". It wasn't aimed at current XI but at what classic would be, old XI.

Also I think Ambuscade was just starting out when I played XI last, messed around in that a bit and it was ok. I wasn't interested in playing current XI endgame more than a little, since I mostly went back for the story and to check out the Trust system.
So for a nostalgia return. And I can see that working to some extent. But I don't think it would retain players. Similar to what you said here, you came back for story and to move on. Launch XI classic, people level up, do story, and leave. Without any endgame grinding I think there'd be much shorter subs and much fewer people interested than before, so the population of classic wouldn't be too impressive.

And yeah, you absolutely can solo all of that stuff, which was necessary because there just weren't people in the world to do them anymore. But you have people in this thread that make it seem like what came after that population death is to blame, when the population started leaving late ToAU/WotG as people got bored of the endgame/leveling grind, as people think would bring "everyone" back for a classic. I remember the "relic curse" being a big thing, that almost anyone who got a relic would quit right after. And that did in fact impact me, after I saw a lot of other players fall to it before and thinking I wouldn't, lol.

Some people seem to be missing the fact that 2006/7 FFXI was rather different from 2010 XI.

I'm not just talking an expansion or two either.

Also, since when is the option of soloing to level cap a bad thing? What do you think BLMs, BSTs, SMNs, PUPs, etc were doing at 75 when no one invite them? At least they aren't left in the cold anymore.

Little offtopic but I'd heard you gotten banned off of FFXIah Spicy. It takes some real skill to get hammered off those forums I've seen so I'm wondering who you pissed off to obtain that.

Not trying to be an ass. Just an honest question.

Also speaking of shitty 75 era content. Fuck Salvage in the ass. People going 0/300+ on a single drop rate isn't anything close to engaging content & anyone who says otherwise is a fool.

There can be endgame grinding. They can speed up the expansion schedule a bit, but say they release vanilla in Dec, they could add RoZ in March, and then we get Sky to grind. Add CoP in Jul/Aug and then we got Sea to grind. etc etc. Eventually they would hit the wall where WotG came out, but WotG has a loooot of story and content. If they balance it all for 75 and roll it out um..a lot faster than it came out in its first release, it would be great. The big problem with classic (and this goes for WoW classic too) is where to stop? Do you stop after WotG and then make new content inline with old 75 content? You can't keep going all the way to the release version, that wouldn't make sense...or is that the endgame plan of WoW classic? Who knows. I'm sure Activision just sees it as another form of temporary revenue anyway. Ideally I would like to see every XI expansion minus Abyssea, keep 75 cap and adapt SoA/Rhapsodies/new content for the state of the game as it was before Abyssea and level cap. Heck, Abyssea would probably be fine too if it was in line with 75 cap XI. It's not Abyssea itself but all the changes made around that time that made the game not as fun for me.

As far as soloing to level cap being a bad thing, it's because many of people's connections in an MMO form through being squished together by necessity in leveling parties. You can solo to cap in every current MMO and their communities suffer for it. XI was great in part because you were forced into meeting and working with so many people...even if it was sometimes good and sometimes bad. The good connections turn into other things, like lasting friendships, relationships or joining up in a linkshell, etc. and the bad connections turn into pretty entertaining drama, which as everyone has noted is sorely lacking in most current gen MMOs.

I think a lot of people's social skills, especially kids who were basically raised on the internet, were developed better through necessarily having to work with people in XI. This is especially true when people can develop those skills outside of the usual endgame setting where it's much more intimidating to get in good with a group of people who might already be cliquey with each other.

I definitely did my share of soloing in XI, I prefer partying. Not only because it was a lot faster in most cases, but I actually enjoyed running parties and helping others level up.

OS RS has continued to release things based on polls and not changing the idea of how the game was back then. I imagine wow classic will be the same as would be a well ran ffxi classic.

All that being said though this will never happen, SE does not care about their ffxi playerbase and they haven't since they released ff14 so it's really irrelevant to speculate

I went 0/450~ on Ashera Harness. What I don't get is how that's somehow considered a cut against current XI, when that's basically just a holdover from 75 XI. Remember 75 cap D. Ring? Or any of the HQ king drops really.

@Silenka I almost fully agree with you. The thing is I just don't see that classic actually getting people again. I don't think it'll recruit the new crowd, and I don't think too many of the old players will come back considering the massive timesinks required for even just leveling up. Some would, sure, but I don't think that many will stick around for it, not for it to be worth launching a classic server.

I don't really think so either. The pace of gaming has changed, and I sink too many hours into XIV now to want to split my time between that and XI (another reason I don't currently play XI). Most others who might be interested have obligations that would keep them from playing XI the number of hours it would require. I just wanted to talk about XI again and toss around the idea of how classic would work XD

Now if it didn't have a monthly fee but you just pay for the base game and whatever cash shop stuff they put out and you could slow grind it at your own pace once in a while when the nostalgia bug hits... that might be a way to keep people active for long periods of time, albeit logged in more sporadically. It might be worth the hard drive space if you could just login whenever and play.

Not like 12.95 is a lot of money, so you could just pay it and log in whenever you want.

When you consider that XIV is cheaper, and has exponentially more staff than that of XI, theres no reason for XI to cost 12.95/mo.

I'm 1/3 on Defending Rings and I don't know what an Ashera Harness is. I played a few months ago but I never really learned about any of the new stuff beyond things I'd get from Mars/Venus that I couldn't AH.

As much as I love FFXI, Classic FFXI wont work. I just dont have the time anymore to invest in such a game. Hell I stoped even playing todays FFXI, which is far more relaxed, because of time constraints (and lack of new things).

Anyone who thinks FFXI Classic would be a success nowadays is out of their mind.

I mean, if I had no job again, had 12 hours a day to play FFXI, had a wife that also played the game, had no other ambitions in life, and just got a RAGING hard on at the thought of my DPS going up .1% after 2 years of me and 60 of my friends farming me a relic twice a week, sure I would play FFXI classic again.

I genuinely do look back with nostalgia glasses and miss the game sometimes. But Jesus Christ, what a colossal waste of my life, time, and energy. As the poster above me said, I don't even have time for FFXI today - which is on hyper-relaxed mode, and actually gives decent meaningful upgrades for your time (even if the content isn't super new).

I'll get back into a solid MMO that took all the time and pain of FFXI classic when it's full on immersive VR (like sword art online), but that's about 50 years away I'm guessing, and by then the robots will hopefully have killed us all.

i'm still genuinely confused what makes people think modern day FFXI is better time wise.

it's literally just HNM camping that was the major time sink, other than that the game could be scheduled and would consume relatively the same amount of time.. and honestly it would consume the same amount of time as any other MMO out there.

    but yeah sure

Dynamis is the only thing where you need 2 solid hours of time to the game in current FFXI. Omen is an hour event, and if you're any sort of good, is more like a 20-30min run. And you can even do canteens solo whenever you so wish if you just want to farm a few cards/swarts. Just about everything else in the game has no specific time requirement, just do as you wish to do. Classic XI required you to be able to find a group, and then social etiquette said you "must" continue for 1-3 hours after that. So just the basic function of the game came with a stigma of taking multiple hours and relying on others, who also relied on you. Hell, my first Sky LS was "Sky is whenever <leader> gets home (usually 3pm est) until around 10-11pm est", every day. It was functionally a second job. Or well, first job for my unemployed ass at the time. The way 75 XI functioned had completely insane time consumption "requirements".

I know its not "Endgame" so I know its not what you're talking about, but honestly leveling up was one of the more shittier things, especially if you weren't a popular job... most time consuming shit I ever did lol. I don't even want to imagine getting THF or SMN to 75 on a "Classic Server", let alone endgame where the population will be A) Less helpful and more elitists than ever and you're proof enough and B) A lot fewer in number.

Hell I solo'd SMN most of the way to 75 thanks entirely to Uleguerand Range...

omen is daily, name an ffxi event ouside of HNMs that was an hour and daily. aeonic runs take 4hrs(if you're good) to 8 hours. it consumes the same amount of time generally. funny how all the content you listed before evaporated once people brought time into the equation. it's amazing how after 15 years you have not changed at all. embarrassing.

also yeah i agree with you karbuncle leveling took forever in old ffxi. not sure i agree with the new way of afking to 99 and then CP botting to 2100 CP though. give me the old way any day

also we're at 85.4k now, dropping a solid 1k every day

I imagine it takes a bit of skill pounding F5 to ffxiah.com with one hand while pounding yourself with the other. More skill than current day XI amirite?
