I finished binging the new Saved By The Bell in two days and it was fucking hilarious, so much fan service to fans of the old show but also enough to stamp out its own identity. Having an over-arching storyline throughout the season was much better than 10 standalone episodes. Full disclosure one of my friends from college is a writer on the show so maybe I am biased but I thought it was great.

So they took a comedy and rebooting it into a drama. It's also odd because Will Smith's character in the original was named after himself because the comedy was about him, literally. So this feels a little try hard to me.

I mean, Will wanted it done, so I'm not sure what other grace people are expecting.

How many black-centric dramas are there running at the moment that presumably focus on issues late teens and young adults face? Much as we may recall FP as a comedy, it did touch on serious issues from time to time. Given recent movements like BLM and such over the past year, I'd also say the timing of this could be incredibly important if it's done with care.

I'll always remember when Carlton and Will got pulled over for DWB and it made such an impact that Brooklyn 99 did the same story 20 years later and it was still relevant (only Terry was out walking around in his own neighborhood rather than driving a borrowed car).
