I mean, I look at it like the Asian philosophy to happiness. You do what you hate to get money, then you use the money to do what you love. In this case, you work to afford to eat and have a house with internet so that in your time off work you can play.
If Mizuki Ito never happened, I'm sure I would be so much happier being able to go to work then come home and camp in my non-working hours to deny other people their chance at Ridill/Adaberk/D.Ring.
All this navel gazing to still be wrong. Anyone can pick a single philosophy from a gargantuan list of philosophies to defend whatever point they are making.
Work can be entertaining and getting entertained can be work, but there's a fucking threshold. The more entertaining a job is, the more worthwhile it is. The more work getting entertained is, the less fun it is. Don't fucking conflate challenge and work. FFXI had a shitload of piss poor gameplay designs choices. The game was fun DESPITE that shit, and what is acceptable had shifted. The number of people that would find classic xi fun today is probably significantly lower the amount of people that found it fun back in the day.
ffxi leveling my first job 1-75 was fun, so was doing a lot of the story stuff
endgame/hnmls was 100% finding joy in other people’s misery. i honestly didn’t even enjoy it when i got a ridill to drop, the “joy” lasted like three seconds
although i did enjoy it when i dinged 70 war and dinged into my ridill and someone in the party was in a rival LS and they rage quit, but again, that’s more joy in other people’s misery
the first kill of an endgame monster was always cool. especially if it just came out... the 100th kill, not so much
TG's first Fafnir kill was epic because we stole it from a JP LS that had been monopolizing it. Like we all hid in the Aery and logged out the night before since no one ever camped against these guys, and got them used to seeing one PLD from our shell hanging out to watch the fight. They generally gave it a few minutes after pop for everyone to gather (no competition) and hung out skilling up and stuff on Darters or in the Tree. That day our PLD gave us all a signal on ventrilo, he claimed it when it popped and everybody logged in at once to kill it. The JP were mad, but impressed.
I played FFXI like a job because it was the most entertaining and worthwhile use of my time.
Getting my N. Legs was the purest moment of joy in my life after three broken linkshells, leveling WHM just to get into iZerg, and two years living in the Aery.
And I still went to the pit every single night after I got them until Ito took a shit on XI by making the Kings pop NMs.
unless you literally sold gil the statement “most worthwhile use of time” seems off
Money is a means to other things that give pleasure.
Nothing matches the dopamine hit I got from Kings. No drugs, no accomplishments, no successes since have equaled it. I've tried everything.
I could be a billionaire and the money would be utterly useless to me beyond being able to buy Square and make FFXI classic and shut 99 cap down.
not saying it wasn’t worthwhile or fun in general
but cmon
“most” worthwhile
After making enough money to cover my monthly expenses, it would be a more worthwhile endeavor for me to camp Kings than to spend that time working (my billable is $171 an hour) or doing and other leisure activity. That money wouldn't give me access to any goods or services or experiences that would give me more pleasure than claiming a Fafhogg would.
Like in pure utils, it is the most efficient path to optimal pleasure.
I mean if I did have billions from winning the lottery, besides funding XI classic and shutting down the abomination that is 99 cap XI, I'd probably build myself a home that could double as a giant no kill animal rescue. Then I'd donate whatever is in excess of never having to work again in my life to charity and the DNC so I can spend my days in Dragon's Aery.
