Except... at some point you have to start narrowing the field... these people aren't polling bad just recently, but for the entire year... if they arbitrarily chose a period where say Yang's polling dropped 5% to keep him out I could see your argument... but that's not what is happening.

This isn’t about Yang. Anyway, I’m reasonably confident he’ll make the debate stage.

My primary, and most recent example, is that the window for this qualifying session was opened two days before 2 of Klobuchar’s qualifyinf polls. She would still need 2 more otherwise. She is a clear “party” candidate.

Also, I’m not making an argument, I’m presenting the fact that they choose arbitrarily. Depending on how you choose to look at where they place that arbitrary cut-off, I don’t think you can blame people for thinking that there is some built-in preference, i.e. the Klobasaurus.

Bloomberg is polling higher than both Klob and Yang and he is only out, thankfully, because he wont accept any donations. His polling numbers are due solely to the effect of millions and millions of dollars in ad buys in early states. Total buys dwarfing any other single, or combination of, front-running candidates.

Let’s just not act like the system is a well-oiled machine.

The percentages are not arbitrary. It goes up exactly 1% each time. It is also true that, historically, no one under 5% at this point in polling has ever gone on to win a nomination.

The length of windows, I believe, is based on a length of life each poll is given based on when it was taken and how soon it is relative to the next debate (because they are not evenly spaced)

I'd write-in.

I live in Massachusetts. I could vote for the cookie monster and it wouldn't matter. We're going Warren (or Biden since we have actually elected a number of republican governors/mayors).

Edit: At this point, the goal is to keep his policies as talking points. Pete has started blatantly copying some of his policies because he is a smarmy bastard, but if he is president that is a win if they actually go through. He's established relationships with Sanders and Biden and seems to be starting to develop one with Warren. I think most people on this board can agree that he deserves a cabinet position.

Sometimes the process can be about more than just "who is going to be president?"

This isn't really the thread for this I guess, but within the past 2 pages on the DNC thread there's multiple pages on people warming to his presence on the stage.

Edit 2: Weirdly, I happen to be rewatching Boston Legal, and in the episode I'm currently watching (April 2008) the firm is suing one of the delegates for not conforming to party standards bysupporting Obama over Hillary, despite the fact that Hillary won the plurality in the MA primary in 2008. It's interesting to just listen to James Spader go off about the DNC in the background while we have this conversation.
