Marvel Rivals is such a better game, actually fun to play and while healer ults are stupid as hell doesn't bother me at all. Plus hero roster is huge and just going to get bigger considering the IP.

Rivals is just everything you wished Overwatch was. Even moreso now that they're adding a "stadium" mode which is basically just a worst version of Rivals from the description. Sucks to suck blizzard, should have made another StarCraft sequel instead.

Actually I should redownload that and give it a go. I really did enjoy that campaign.

Or not mismanaged OW by trying to monetize it under the guise of an upgrade

I looked through the updates, watched some videos on the new Perk system, and like... It feels like they saw Marvel Rivals and smashed a "Break in case of emergency" update and threw out a bunch of stuff. Like a Third person mode itself seems really hilarious when you think about it.

I mean if anything they learned that Supports should be more active and fun roles, then people wouldn't mind playing them. Some of the perks for Support heroes involve allowing more DPS while not losing Supporting. Kiriko or whatever for instance sends out 2 healing thingies when she hits an enemy with her Kunai. Ana/Some new hero can headshot with their attacks. Baptist gets an "Auto-fire" Heal turret while his Ult is active so he can DPS and heal during Ult. As someone who adored playing supports in Marvel Rivals (Loki and Warlock are amazing, and Racoon is a great low-skill healer with actually very insane DPS potential in the right hands), I appreciate some of these 'perks'.

The perks definitely add /something/ to the game, and each Hero is going to feel a lot stronger depending on your Perks, some of the Perks were just "Overwatch 1 removed content" repackaged, like one of Reapers perks was picking up Life orbs off dead enemies for a quick heal, Bastion got Self-Heal back and one of his Perks is his old Ult (Explosive Turret) given to his tank mode.

Overall, the new Perk system (which as I'm understanding is a permanent feature in Comp/Quick Play now, not a special mode) seems to be their way of 'unbalancing' a little and focusing more on fun, which quite frankly the game has desperately needed for a long time because lets face it, Esports didn't pan out for it, and Marvel Rivals showed them people care a lot more about fun than perfectly balanced gameplay.

Is it enough to make me come back? I mean maybe not in competitive again but I could see myself trying it out in Quickplay or something in the future if I ever get in the mood. I think its going to be a fun update for those who still play, but not sure its going to cause a huge, long lasting influx of people. As others have said, too little too late, and OW has burned us too much before. Between Overwatch 2 cancelling all promised content and basically being a much scummier Monetization overhaul, and the swarms of controversy surrounding ActiBlizz, most people have soured to the franchise.

I think everyone should remember despite them bringing some stuff back it's mostly half-assed (6v6 is comp only why? just commit) and the problems 2 brought in terms of monetization and overall community are still going to be there. Loot boxes are nice but I'm still stuck with a BP that expires / that atrocity they call a shop. Hopefully they at least put all the OW1 stuff in the loot boxes and remove them from the store entirely, but even then they don't dispense how they used to and they really should. That might get some people back, but otherwise,

not good enough. This still falls short of admitting the game sucks now and that 2 failed. I'm willing to admit nothing short of a relaunch of 1 is going to bring me back and that's not going to happen. I have options now and that is whole ass their problem to deal with.

Hop on Rivals has replaced hop on Overwatch. And they should be worried.

agree with this. perks and generally shaking up the meta for fun over stolid competitiveness feels a nice move. might dive back in for a few games with all the updates, tho remain skeptical and know it won't ever be quite what it was / should have been. nothin wrong with a bad game becoming better tho.

Nah that was OW2. This is Voidwatch's "We fucked up but we ain't going to fix it, we'll just give half-assed half-measures."

I get that I'm in the minority on this point but god damn I will fight to the death on the idea that these two things don't have to be mutually exclusive.

I'd love to say I agree, but haven't found a good example of a game doing it yet. Unless you mean subjectively you think theres no reason a game that doesn't balance the fun out of the game can be an Esport, in which case we agree, but those who'd play it as one probably wouldn't.

The issue is that fun means different things to different people. High skill players value competition; the game is fun when it rewards skill and the game is unfun when it is broken. Normies just want to run at each other and feel powerful (which is why Rivals is plagued by people playing kill simulator and forgetting objectives). The game becomes unfun when it is too hard for them to engage and they feel punished for being bad (thus why bot games exist in QP)

The issue is that balance is not a constant across brackets and enabling fun at the lower brackets can ruin balance in the higher brackets. Perfect balance in the higher bracket takes away the brokenness that normies enjoy.

You either design the game to be good or design the game for mass appeal (where most people aren't good). We learned this in Abyssea.

People embrace meritocracy because they are too ignorant to realize meritocracy works against them since a majority, by definition, cannot be exceptional.

I'm just the rare one who enjoys the mere existence and structure of hierarchy.

Worst part is hitting that intermediate level where getting better means having to do the unfun stuff.

Perk system seems like it's just a stripped down version of HoTS talent system, I watched some of the stream and yeah seemed like it was just throwing shit at the wall and hoping for the best.
