I came out of this movie feeling this may be the best movie I've ever seen. I really can't overstate how much I loved this film. The animation and the acting are obviously great, but the use of colors for scenes, the way they show perspective. Everything about this movie is spectacular.

Oh yeah, I think that was especially apparent in Gwen's world. So freaking cool.

Every frame was a painting. Just incredible.

The only complaint I have about it (like the first film) is the stutter of the animation. Otherwise perfect, but that one fucking thing.

It's not even necessary. Fucking ReBoot from 1994 had smooth motion.
This, and any anime in 3D with it (looking at you Berserk 2016), have no fucking excuse.

Not an exaggeration to say this could count as one of the great cinematic trilogies if they stick the landing.

I don't know if they can stick the landing though.

    Spoiler: show
What made No Way Home great was the fact it leaned into being a Spider-Man origin story despite trying to skip all of that at the start. That in the end, Spider-Man is about sacrifice and Holland's Peter had to learn that. This film committed so hard to being against that though with the "What makes us heroes is the fact we will fight against fate itself" that I see them going for the happy ending for Miles.

A happy ending won't make a bad story. One of the biggest complaints about Spider-Man stories is how predictable they are because he has to make the decision that costs him personally so that he can save others. Apparently every Spider-Man loses a police captain that they're close to because they're trying to save others from a villain while the captain loses their life to save a child the hero can't get to. We saw in the movie how every Spider-Man has an inciting event loss, and Miles already had that. Why does Spider-Man have to keep losing? Why does he have to keep learning the same lesson over and over?

Life can be hard without tragedy. And Spider-Man's life is already defined by tragedy - it doesn't need to keep getting defined by more and more of it.

My first guess right now is that Miles is going to confront the reason why canon events exist in the first place, and my second is the cause is going to be something from Beyond.

    I think that it would.

Overpredictability is one thing, but one of things that makes Spider-Man special as a hero is that sacrifice. That is the point of Uncle Ben's death; that Peter recognizes his powers aren't just a fun gift, they are an obligation he bears. That's what makes him a hero, his willingness to bear that burden for the good of others.

Miles needs to try his best... and fail. Because that's what the other Spiders went through. The death of his uncle in the first movie is not sufficient for that imo. The death of his dad after trying his hardest to fight fate? That would be.

It's okay for heroes to fight against the idea of necessary loss. But in the end, they shouldn't win. Just like how Spider-Holland tried to fix everything and then to make it right he also has to lose Michelle and Ned. Or how the Avengers refuse to trade Vision's life to stop Thanos, and then they lose it all in Infinity War (and then in Endgame they needed to lose Tony and Nat to undo what happened in addition to Vision still being dead).

The movie presents a trolley problem of saving the multiverse or saving one person, and anything that doesn't result in one person dying is a cop-out. It is unrealistically happy, and it cheapens Miguel's character and why all the other Spiders bought in to the need to let Miles' story play out naturally. One way I could see this working out is if Miles doesn't need to pay the price because another Spider does. My money would be on another Spider having to lose someone important (Gwen losing her dad), or Spider-India dying saving Miles' dad because of what Miles did for Capt. Singh or dying to close the tear in the multiverse. Maybe they go with what NWH did and someone else dies (Miles' mother). But I don't think Miles should get to be the one Spider that doesn't have to face the canonical law.

Since Across the Spider-Verse starts with the line "let's try something different," I'm going to argue that this entire premise is going against what the movies are trying to say.

    Also

    Spoiler: show
Miles already lost his Uncle Aaron. Gwen lost her Peter, Peter loses Ben - the lesson that with great power there must also be great responsibility is already ingrained. Miles wasn't brave enough to act when he should have and Aaron died for it.

I don't think there's any value in telling the story that we've not only already seen, but that we know now has been repeated infinite times across the multiverse. I think it runs counter to the narrative at this point and would make a worse story if Miles DOESN'T show Spider-Man can be better. The Spider Society has resigned itself to letting people die because it's "supposed to happen." That doesn't sound like an ending Spider-Man would accept.

I can understand the other Spiders being resigned to the idea that it "has" to happen because it happened to all of them and they couldn't stop it, but the story here isn't about society changing Miles, it's about Miles - the anomaly - doing things differently. If it ends with everything being exactly the same, that's a disappointment.

Also, I think it cheapens the idea of "sacrifice" to insist it has to be a human life when Spider-Man is constantly sacrificing his time and well-being, his relationships, and his ambitions to save and help others. When you look at everything Peter Parker has given up or missed out on to help others, it's insulting to say that Spider-Man won't learn sacrifice unless Captain Stacy or his multiversal equivalent dies.

Beyond the Spider-Verse is going to be about confronting the reason behind the Canon events, that's my belief, and I can't wait.

The dominos started falling Friday as Sony made a number of changes to its theatrical calendar amid the actors and writers strikes, including taking Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse off its spring 2024 date.

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is the biggest strike casualty yet in terms of release date changes, since it is part of a prized and successful franchise. Sony is taking the movie off of the calendar for now, since actors cannot do any voice work.

This is the only thing the writer's strike could affect that I would care, but on the bright side hopefully the animators will have more time to work on this one. But based on how the directors work I wouldn't bet on it lol

It sucks because I've loved the stuff Lord and Miller make, but what I've heard about the way they do it leaves a lot to be desired.
