I prefer GoT show despite it going to trash because the books were an insufferable read. I stopped 3 books in and was happy when the announced there'd be a show.

I hate watch the expanse after the second season, but absolutely love the books.

The problem between books and adaptations is different points resonate with different people. For example, people end up liking characters for a whole lot of reasons. Removing a beloved character, merging them on missing parts the reader considers critical to their perception of the character cheapens /makes them worse that they are in the source material.

It's even more apparent if the show/movie ends up being average (average is a perfectly fine thing to be, but society pretends it's not), when they consider the source material better than average.

Was going to mention this, there's a shitload missing from the movies, but they are still beloved by most fans of the books.

I wonder if that's a side effect of expectations. When those came out, people were used to adaptations being complete trash but watching them because it was better than nothing. The lotr movies were decent and fondly remembered for the time. They would probably be panned if they released today.
