There’s no money in album sales anymore. It’s all in tours and shit. I forgot who I heard say that.

It’s an oversimplification but accurate.

More exactly, when an artist is signed to a major record label they are usually brought on a two or three album deal. The record label pays for renting studio time, hiring a producer, a sound mixer, in house musicians on as needed basis, physical production & distribution, and promotion of the album. They also secure licensing fees from radio stations around the world to play the song. This is all tremendously expensive. The label is fronting all of these costs and they make a majority of it back on album sales. The artists themselves get a very small cut of the first album sales. Typically, if the first album is a smash hit record these costs can be recouped quickly and this makes it easier for the artist before they are required to do a second album. If the first album is a hit, the label will typically give the artists anywhere from 18-36 months to rest/tour/side work/write material for the next album. It’s more of a sure thing. If the first album is a flop, the studio will rush the artist back in quickly (usually 6-8 months) to make the next album and get out of the boondoggle of a deal. Sometimes artists won’t even have material yet for a new album, and studios will give them songs they have purchased from other songwriters and stored in a song bank and just make the artist record it and put it on their album.

Going on tour is the primary way artists make money. This is often why you see multiple artists/bands on the same tour—because they can all split the cost of hiring the promoter who secures the venues and promotes the event. Artists get a MUCH bigger cut on ticket sales—and merch—so don’t skimp on that $35 t-shirt if you really like the artist.

Digital downloads are a little bit different. In the era when iTunes was the only option it was damn near criminal what Apple was able to get away with paying the artists. Sometimes not even a full penny per download. Spotify is MUCH friendlier to the artist so I would suggest using them if you are going to buy to support the artist. And also ad revenue from YouTube factors in as well, so make sure you always listen to the song on the artist’s official Vevo page if you want them to get a cut.

A lot of these reasons are why you see the more successful and established artists jump from label to label or self produce their albums. They’ve got much more clout when negotiating deals. But it’s a real rat race out there for people trying to break in the game.

Friend of mine is spending a good deal of time with the recording engineers and studying recording and producing so that he and his band mates scan produce their own albums as they've had issues with labels. I think they're on their third or fourth label. The newest one at least let's them create a newer, more.matute sound rather than trying to sell the lead singer (an early twenties girl) as a young adult sex object.
