Been having problems with the left side of my ribs for the past month, thought I hurt something at the gym, turns out I have an enlarged spleen and docs are certain thats whats been giving me pain.

So my wife asked me if I'd thought about where I'd like to live next. I didn't think much of it at the time, as we're looking to sell the house and upgrade. I respond I didn't want to look too much further south as the tax increase heading closer to NYC is real. She said to me "well, we only stay in this area because our friends are here right?" Again, didn't think much of it.

My drive in to work this morning that conversation popped into my head and now I'm not sure what to make of it. Need to talk to her. Our conversation had always been finding something in the same general area, maybe the west side of the Hudson River instead, but now I'm thinking she has other plans. I don't mind moving to another state or something, but it needs to be the right time. I just interviewed for, and have a 50/50 shot at, a promotion and should be able to sit for my Professional Engineering license exam in NY. To move out of state now could really fuck up that whole track.

I would need at least a few years for this job to finish, if I get it, and if I don't I'd need at least a year to get my PE test done.

I know Astylla wants to move cause California is fucking expensive, and now that my father passed, I quite literally have no blood family left that I like. That said, I'm 43 in November. I'll be 13 years into my pension in November. I also make good money, even by California cost of living standards, and the thought of essentially tossing that all away at my age to start fresh terrifies me.

That said, come time for me to retire, fuck yeah I'll move. Pretty much anywhere except a deep south state like Texas, Kentucky, etc.

Good buddy of mine lives right on the border of PA and makes the commute to NYC everyday, about 40 min to an hour each way he tells me. The COLA in his area is dirt cheap.

State politicians will still remain conservative for a long time so you'd still have to deal with their shenanigans, case in point, the singular voting drop box per county (population be damned) that Texas had to suffer this past election.

Maybe, but depends on where. Bergen, for example, isn't much better than Rockland/Westchester depending on where you are. Going out towards PA is possible, but I think the conversation is more about going to another region entirely.

The plus side for me is that my company is literally international and has jobs all over the US. They have internal postings for GA, CA, PA, SC, etc etc
