I truly cannot comprehend when I see someone tell a celebrity/athlete/actor/author/streamer/WHATEVER that “I was in a bad place in my life and you SAVED me!”
Like, I’m super happy that person got out of their rut, even if I don’t get it—props to you—but I cannot fathom being depressed or whatever and then watching a movie or see a touchdown or hear a song and being like “bro you saved my life with that”. What?
I understand admiring someone because of their skill level or how they entertain you but I couldn’t imagine enjoying something so much that it pulled me back from the edge of darkness like a lot of people claim happened for them.
I think some of it comes from people seeing their own heroes dealing with the same shit they are going through, so by proxy they feel less alone.
ironically the first answer explains the thought process of the "saved" person
not to diminish pain or castigate anyone's connection to a piece of art but i strongly doubt many of these people were truly on the edge in terms of it being all over through suicide / overdose / violence / imprisonment.
regardless, saved or not glad a song or movie or what have you helped them get somewhere better. as Melena said there is great comfort in knowing you aren't alone and others have gone through what you are going through.
