I've been in retail the past two years. Thankfully most of the job is not customer facing, but I do need to do sales and cover the floor sometimes.

Intelligence definitely plays a role in maturity, but perspective (from life experiences) are also part of that and tend to be correlated with age.

I definitely think it's reasonable to assume that you will have the more in common with someone in your age bracket all other things equal.

That being said I think intelligence/income bracket probably play a bigger role if we are segregating the factors.

I find it infinitely harder to relate to other people in their mid to late thirties who never went to college or with radically different college experiences (CC, for profit scam, local trash school) vs. people in their 20s who also went to nationally ranked schools or made it to grad school.

I hate my living situation and want to leave immediately to get a place of my own again.

I've explained this to my girlfriend and she's said that would be extremely hurtful to her and a big step back in our relationship (keeping in mind living together was not a step I ever willingly took in the first place).

Thing is, I don't see myself taking any further steps forward in our relationship. But she's never been anything but sweet and kind and loving to me, literally took me in without hesitation when my place burned down. She doesn't deserve to be hurt by me.

But every time I have to leave work and drive back to her place my day is ruined.

I think it's probably more important to think about why your day is ruined than it is to think about the living situation itself.

Like, why don't you see things moving forward? Might feel like a dick move but this woman took you in without hesitation.

This sucks. It's cliche as fuck, but you know what you need to do. She's gonna feel like you've used her when you exit, and you're gonna feel that way too, and that's because you have.
She put you up until you got your ducks in a row. No matter how sensible you were or how good your intentions were, you have.
If you don't see your relationship progressing, then you need to be honest with her about that ASAP.
