2019 Blue Gartr Game of the Year Discussion Thread: Everything is a Soulsborne Game Now

It's back for the fourth year in a row! The mods/admins will have their say in a week, but this is the time for us as a community to shit on each other's GOTY choices!

I tried to include the major GOTY contenders from around the interwebs along with a few surprises!

This year I didn't play a lot of new games (mostly due to playing Cold Steel 1 and 2), but did get to play Kingdom Hearts 3 and Cold Steel 3, as well of Shadowbringers (which is so good ya'll). If I had to choose it would be Shadowbringers, even if it was an MMO expansion!

I'm kind of straddling the fence here.

Fire Emblem is the best title to "get it right" in returning to its legacy form. Untitled Goose Game got hosed at TGA, and is easily the best title to have some original thought put into it this year. Star Wars gets best runner up after Fire Emblem for returning to form.

Indivisible kind of collapsed around its own hype, Bloodstained shot itself in the foot, i'm still not quite sure how I feel about Death Stranding, and the other titles kind of get lost in the mix. Waiting for Cold Steel on the Switch.

Overall: HONK~!
Runner Up: Tie - Fire Emblem and Star Wars.

I haven’t played much on this list but for me it would come down to RE2 Remake and Shadowbringers. I’d have to give the nod to Shadowbringers and that’s mostly on SE for delivering probably their best FF story in ages, MMO or otherwise, a near flawless launch, and renewing a player base that was honestly starting to lose interest. LA-HEE~!

Tales of Vesperia Definitive Edition was my GOTY. >.> Even if it is over 10 years old technically.

It probably would have been Iceborne, but not out on PC and I haven't played it yet.

It was so hard to cut this to the 20 poll limit (like I wanted to include Astral Chain too), so straight up ports/remasters (not remakes) kind of were the first to go

Bloodstained for me. Small team absolutely knocked it out of the park. Igarashi still has it. Though i guess my choice would've been different if I had bought the Switch version instead of PC.

Pokemon and Death Stranding were very polarizing games. People either loved it or really hated it with very little middling opinions.

Gotta go with Fire Emblem. As much as I loved CS3 it does take some time to get into.

Anyway if I could do a top 3...

Pretty easy choice for me. My vote is for Sekiro, but RE2 is a very close second.

With that said, I haven't had a chance to play DMC5, but I'm pretty sure it would be 2nd or 3rd on my list from what I've seen.

XIV for games I've personally played, because of a combination of crazy good narrative and ost (two things I obsess over in my old age), but I have a few other nominees for different reasons.

RE2 gets "Best Return to Form for a Company that was making Shitty Games for awhile". Techincally RE7 started it, but after the dark ages of Capcom in the middle of the 2010's I'm just happy that big C is back and cranking out great games.

Bloodstained gets "Best kickstarter that actually came out!" It makes me hope that somewhere down the line, Konami sends extends an olive branch so we can have a true Remake of SOTN or a sequel, but Bloodstained also needs a sequel with a bigger budget.

Star Wars gets the "I fucking told you that Single Player games still make money, so long as you aren't expecting 30 billion in revenue from a single game, EA!" award. Pretty self-explanatory, but the only people that believed that single player games didn't sell were the bloated cocaine-addled execs peddling their bullshit to investors and shareholders. Make a good game, market it, and it'll sell. Period.

^ That said, I haven't bought it. I won't buy it. I haven't bought an EA title since they fucked me with Sim City back in 2012-ish. I made a promise back then, and I've stuck to it. I'm not even sure what will lift the curse at this point... maybe if they don't butcher the Command and Conquer remaster, since much of the old Westwood team is working on it. Let those guys and girls handle their baby without corporate oversight or lootbox fuckery, and we'll see, EA.

Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order

I've been trying to clear out my backlog (particularly my PS3 backlog, with the goal of completing it prior to PS5 coming out), so haven't played as many new games this year as previous years. Of the five games that came out this year that I did play, I would put them in this order:

Days Gone
Death Stranding
GreedFall
The Sinking City
Man of Medan

So my GotY would be Days Gone, with Death Stranding the best of the poll options. Hell, it's the only poll option. I don't mind voting for it, though, because I enjoyed the hell out of it.

I double this. I’ve only only played two games in the lost (Sekiro and Apex), of those two I’d say I enjoyed Apex more but Sekiro was still a great game.

But Shadowkeep I’ve been playing since it hit and still enjoy it even if undying sucked ass.

I don't think I played any games that came out this year. I spent all year on DQXI, God of War, Spider-Man, FFXV, and now NieR Automata.
