You can’t breathe Ebola onto someone. Well, I guess they could spit in your eye. That’s a stretch. It’s direct contact with bodily fluids. I could walk into a room full of Ebola patients and almost 100% be fine as long as I don’t touch anyone.

Imma need a hazmat suit to walk into a room of covid-19 cases.

We're going one-provider-one-patient route to preserve PPE for this very reason.

that gets a little hairy when they're spouting blooddookie out of every orifice. that's some serious droplet/contact.

I mean... they are not identical, but to say they aren't similar "at all" in transmission is one, false, and two, the idea that a pandemic response team meant to minimize those transmissions didn't play a part in minimizing the impact of the 2014 outbreak that HC is trying to sell us on is... incorrect.

Maybe to a layperson, they sound similar. But they aren’t similar. They are literally two different modes of transmission. They require different PPE, they enter your system in different ways. You can dig your heels in here but you have three medical providers telling you that you’re wrong. I’m not trying to be an asshole here, I’m just telling you that, medically speaking, you’re wrong.

i was bringing this up in the corona thread. ebola is actual droplet transmission. you're not exhaling the shit, you have to get in on you/in your mucous membranes to be a worry (and please correct me here if i've missed a point). coronavirus is droplet too, but the distinction is really splitting hairs because the it hangs out in the air for so long and is so survivable, and you can transmit while asymptomatic. the distinction is really arbitrary with coronavirus and i don't think it's helpful. the public does not understand the difference.

It can transmit by droplet (insanely rare), but it’s not droplet. It’s not really splitting hairs either. It requires direct contact with bodily fluid. Aerosol transmission would likely be from, as I said above, saliva or GI tract or respiratory secretions and the person being insanely close.

Here’s a WHO article on it.

Theoretically, wet and bigger droplets from a heavily infected individual, who has respiratory symptoms caused by other conditions or who vomits violently, could transmit the virus – over a short distance – to another nearby person.

no, not with ebola. ebola is pretty straightforward droplet/contact. coronavirus is droplet but the distinction really isn't very helpful.

    edit for clarity.

i think you’re interchanging direct contact into a mucous membrane and droplet incorrectly.

I mean, a droplet of infected bodily fluid has to come in contact with an open source, but that’s not how droplet is used as far as medical terminology is concerned. When we say something is transmitted via droplet, were talking respiratory droplets. That’s not how Ebola is passed.

that's a fair point (and you're correct, i was being too broad there), but it brings me back to the point i was trying to make. i've had to explain this exact thing a dozen times to friends and family members. they hear it's not airborne, but don't realize the distinction between droplet/airborne and don't take this seriously.

That's why I had said to layperson, they may sound similar, but the actual mode of transmissions are very different. I could understand the difficulty of trying to parse airborne vs droplet vs contact to someone who has little medical knowledge.

I've seen it multiple times when explaining precautions to family members.

It really is difficult to grasp when you don't have medical knowledge.

Fair enough, I can accept your opinion on it except for that health care workers literally are trained to use hazmat suits when dealing with Ebola patients so perhaps the prevailing health agencies are not quite as confident as you are in avoiding transmission.

You'll also note I said "walk into a room without touching anyone". Health care providers are doing procedures, touching patients, interacting, moving.

Covid-19 is spread by respiratory droplets.

Ebola is a direct contact with contaminated body fluids (blood, feces, vomit, semen, etc).

I get the difference and I'm not arguing with you on that, I'm not going out of my way to argue with a professional on a subject that's tangential to the point the topic was originally raised to address.

And not touch anyone. Kind of important when the transmission is, again, direct contact with contaminated fluids.

Then let me get back on topic; is an Ebola outbreak lessened by the presence of a dedicated pandemic response team?
