Texas has easily the 3rd biggest scene in the country that no one could manage to get an online weekly running is fucking mind boggling. But that would imply this was about being able to play and not getting butthurt that you can't play in the same tournament as Punk and Idom.

Probably see it, games in a pretty good spot at the end of the first season.

Really only Faust and Anji could be considered bad (maybe Jack-O dependant on the matchup) and they toned down the OP shit pretty effectively.

That said it'll probably just be a top 8 of 8 Happy Chaos players because fuck you thats why

    Month late, but fuck it.

This should be the death knell for anything Capcom does in the FGC space. They were obviously leaning towards this if you saw anything regarding their esports book. And now it's here. A number of orgs and event organizers are now asking if it's even worth it to feature Street Fighter if they have to deal with an ornery, capricious JP-driven process. Especially if Capcom JP can turn around and say you need a full license because "your great looking trailer must have been produced by a full team" (true story - tournament will remain nameless). Capcom JP is going to stay fucking the golden goose for all its worth, and then wonder why everyone else around them is prospering when they have a withering husk. The days of Matt Deezie, Haunts and Combofiend are long gone.

    Also, KOF15 is fun.

That is beyond fucking ridiculous. I can't imagine the amount of fury and rage for all those involved.

Is this really going to be an insurmountable burden? Like Valve Blizzard Psyonix and Riot all have licensing if your prizepool exceeds a certain threshold? This seems to be a standard practice.

Those companies will provide far more support and money to people running tournaments than Capcom will, on top of every other competitive gaming scene being more exclusive as opposed to most fighting game tournaments letting anyone enter.

It's Capcom telling people they can't run their games at your tournament unless you adhere to their archaic rules and regs, which flies in the face of the FGCs grassroots system. We've already seen hints of this in how often Nintendo will cock block people trying to put Smash Bros into a larger tournament, which has led to most organizers just dropping Smash entirely (see : Evo)

Coupled with a lot of regular and favorite commentators just not being invited back for reasons for this year's tour, Capcom really shooting their own foot. No Sajam (criticized SFV's netcode) nor F-word & Logansama for the UK tournaments (wut).

This was bound to happen though. People wanted more money in the scene and this is the unfortunate outcome. The problem is the juice ain't worth the squeeze, especially since Capcom isn't sitting on an uncontested throne anymore.

If you're at the threshold to require a license - significant, actually.

Two of the major pain points are the prize pool ($2000, which at $10/head - average tournament entry - means you're now subject as soon as you hit 200 people) and sponsorship contributions (capped at $5000), with a remote third being the restriction on paying to spectate.

With respect to the sponsorships, funding for most tournaments once you hit Regional primarily comes through the following:

    1. A deal with the hotel to access the ballroom at a reduced rate in exchange for a number of hotel rooms sold. Note: this was one of the largest issues that most TOs were shitting bricks over when the pandemic first hit, commonly referred to as attrition rate.
1a. This is becoming less relevant as the larger tournaments are moving to distinct event spaces, unless the event space also happens to be owned by a hotel group
    2. Sponsorship deals with companies, whether that be ad packages, etc, in exchange for money or some form of equivalent service (example of the latter - think Gaming Gen)
    3. Booths offered to a variety of services, such as Artist Alleys, stick modding, merchandise, popcorn, etc. This has some bleed with #2, which may result in advertisements, etc
    4. Venue fees, either via competitors or spectators
4a. Note: The language around "spectators" actually has some real legal weight behind it. There's a reason why some tournaments requires you to buy a competitor's badge rather than a "spectator" badge

#2 and #3, depending on how the deals are structured, can easily blow the $5000 threshold. Once you're beyond that, you're required to submit for a license. Depending on whatever sliding scale bullshit Capcom JP decides to use, you'll likely be out tens of thousands at minimum. All for one game.

This is especially coming true as all physical events post-pandemic are experiencing cost increases in the neighborhood of 20-50%. I've been listening to some of the figures TOs have been throwing out on how much it costs for internet drops, power, etc. and it's absolute madness. Venues are trying to make up for the last two years by squeezing blood from the stone now.

This also does not go into other legitimate issues, such as:
    1. the license requires a grant of permission to Capcom to use any and all event footage associated to SFV, whether it be stream, photography or B-roll/social media capture, with no compensation provided. This is usually worked out between the TO and the media partners, whether it be a separately negotiated deal or a white-label deal (eg. World Tours). This would primarily piss off media partners, and they may try to get money out of the TO to offset.
    2. the license's terms has the capability to shutdown artist alleys, who may be using Capcom's IP. At minimum, artists may no longer feature Capcom property. This also opens the door to grey area - what about Dynamic Custom Beadworks, which had a license with Capcom to produce merchandise?

So its dead as dead gets then, lol. The TOs used to say they barely made anything off the events, so either they were full of it or they will be operating at a massive loss now. So what are we looking at, just a couple of events a year going forward? And if any drop Capcom, sorry they are basically just a shitty anime convention at that point.

Assuming events this year can weather the losses that are coming (which stem from multiple fronts - venue, cost of travel [holy shit has this exploded], staffing & COVID requirements, etc), it comes down to however many events we lose on that front. As for dropping Capcom and the repercussions thereof, you should have been doing that calculus a number of points during SFV before we even got here.

I think the events that will survive will be the ones that built something else on top of just being a fighting game tournament. Combo Breaker feels like a chill festival. CEO has its wrestling gimmick, to the point where it was working with AEW and NJPW. What I'm really worried about is someone like Big E, who also has another provision of the Capcom license that could come and bite him in the ass (just because he ran so many tournaments in a year).

That being said, just because Capcom is out doesn't mean the scene itself is dead. Just means that you don't have a reason to go to a tournament anymore unless you find another game that manages to hit you the same way. Best we can hope for is Capcom pulls their head out of their ass in time for SF6.

Texas Showdown didn't even bother to check that their sfv setups had the recent patch and Luke.

Yes, she is. She's the quintessential DLC anime fighter: power-crept to the max to gain the maximum amount of sales revenue.

They were power creeping hard with the later DLC seasons (though they did tune most everyone else down) but she's in a whole nother level.

UI Goku was and is super duper good but Lab Coat is just completely broke.

I, as a spectator don't mind, because her kit is cool and she's smokin' hot, but yeah, as a competitor, I'd be annoyed as hell. She's like Vanessa in KOF 15, but amped up tenfold.

Infiltration has been banned from EVO/ComboBreaker/CEO/etc.

Didn't it come out that this dude basically did nothing, or it was he said she said at best? Like Korean courts are notorious for being complete nonsense.

This seems ridiculously stupid by the tournament organizers.

The TLDR from the court transcripts and investigation from sponsors was something like:

Infiltration wants to divorce his wife, but she doesn't agree to it. They end up in some physical altercation at some point where infiltration makes a bunch of threats, and his wife ends up with like a sprained wrist. Infiltration leaves, she gets a restraining order against him. Wife changes the locks and won't let him pickup his stuff unless he moves back in with her and continues the relationship. He hires a locksmith to get back into his own house and recover his stuff, some of which may or may not have been damaged by her. He sues for the money he put down on the lease for the house. She counter-sues for her injury and the damage to the door lock from the locksmith(? lol).

Whatever the case, there are clearly much worse offenders in the FGC, and it's pretty odd to ban him for it again like 4 years after the fact.
