It was never thick-skinned. Its a bunch of dudes who claim to be thick-skinned only in the sense that they'll ride or die with the scene, only because the worst of them have nothing else to fall back on.

Otherwise, its the same thin-skinned tribe of fanboys as any other scene, just one based around arcades and consoles and with a lot of brothas within the community.

I can see pro tours going to a hybrid of online and offline with how well the cpt regional events have gone with sub par online. Sf6 likely will have ironed out the issues with sfvs netcode ala MVCI so maybe this discussion will actually be relevant in the near future. Then again Tekken 7 on PC has lost all legitimacy with the rampant cheating that goes on.

Online fighting game tournaments are also reliant on the player base not having potato internet, which we have seen time and again is not possible due to location and the general poverty level of the fgc

The idea that the FGC isn't mainstream is because the games are too hard or that the people are too "toxic" is a complete misunderstanding of human nature.

FG by nature weeds out soys and weak people because it's a 1v1 game/setting. The average person hates confrontation and seeks to do whatever it takes to avoid conflict. This is fundamental human behavior. They especially hate conflict or competition that is direct and personal. They don't want to be exposed. They don't want to have to go will vs will with another human being.

Hell, just the act of walking into an arcade, putting up your coin to let people know you want that smoke next, is testament to what type that person is. This very act alone deters your average soy gamer from every wanting to participate in that kind of setting. THEN factor in the atmosphere of those places. Loud, obnoxious, alpha male behavior. Yelling, cussing, aggression, shit talking, hype, and even physical violence. This is/was the norm of the FGC. This is what the FGC is.

And for that reason alone, FGC will never be popular with the average soygamer.

I'll never not compare FG to boxing. It's literally the boxing equivalent of eatsports.

Athletes may act tough because they dunk basketball or brutally tackle someone in rugby/football. You have these giant grown ass 6 to 7 foot ass, 200-300lb athletes that pretend they're tough. And they are tough. In team setting where it's expected of them to do that and not worry about immediate physical retaliation. But put them in a boxing ring and tell them the other man will hit them back and watch as they recoil into something else entirely. The reality sets in. You're in a real fight. Getting punched in the face is different from getting tackled in rugby or getting elbowed in the face by accident in basketball. Because the act of putting hands on someone in boxing/MMA is intentional. It's mean spirited. It's pure violence.

You don't play boxing.

FG is like boxing in this sense. It's not meant to ever attract League of Legend and DoTA soys or FPS dudebros. It's never going to appeal to the mainstream just like boxing is never going to appeal to the mainstream the way team sports like soccer/basketball/football.

Just like only the poorest and toughest kids take up boxing/MMA, only the poorest and hood niggas (of all races) will be attracted to the FG and FGC.

tl;dr fuck your eatsport, fuck accessability, and fuck mainstream appeal. Any attempt to change this will only result in a dumbed down and boring scene with minimal growth in mainstream appeal.

I don't need FGC to be mainstream eatsport. I got a real life job.

With how quickly the MvC2 arcade 1up systems sold out, fingers crossed that's enough initiative for Disney and Capcom to get that out on PC/Consoles.
