So SWT has issued two different responses and neither time directly responded to Nintendo's assertion that they were told they would not be given a license BUT ALSO that they were not expected to cancel the upcoming 2022 championship event.

The whole thing is fucky.

It's not a direct cease and desist but to me, it seems like that's a no and they'll do a cease and desist. With how much work, time and money being placed into these events, it seems silly that they'd risk it? Especially with "those times are over" means the previous status quo is not gonna happen. No license and no previous status quo.

It really fucking isn't KC literally host 35-40 man brackets of melee and ultimate at like 3 different venues every week while we haven't had consistent numbers like that since the usfiv days.

What's sad is that all the best FGC players turned out to be some of the worst streamers, too. Smug, BrianF, and Yipes are the only ones I can bare to watch, and even then it's still kinda meh

Like, I get it. "The shit I like is better than the shit that other people like." I get it, but the tribalism is pointless. At the end of the day, its all a bunch of gamers trying to make a buck playing games for a living. There's no fucking difference. Its just petty to pull the "my sportsball is better than your sportsball" angle.

You're all losing to MOBAs and FPSes if we're going to start pulling that stupid shit, so lets not. The FGC has their good moments, and so does the Smash scene.

smash ultimate is already one of the highest selling games on switch, they don't need the competitive scene to help push it

Honestly, its the truth. What does Nintendo gain from it? Everyone who is going to buy Smash already buys Smash. The company has a literal gold vault, they have so much fucking cash. The only people who want Smash to be an Esport are the players and some fans; two people of which will already buy the game.

Its the same thing with Game Freak and Pokemon. Why should they make a bug-free game? Everyone who was going to buy the game anyway already buys it. The only people who want a better game are people who are already buying it. They break records every launch, regardless of the quality.

Do -I- personally want a competitive Smash scene? Sure, because I enjoy competition - playing and viewing - but I'm not so arrogant as to think that a fucking megacorp gives a shit about two things that don't bring in more revenue or eyes on the product. Nintendo doesn't need help getting eyes on Smash: if they really cared about selling more copies, they'd release it multiplat.

No matter how much a fan (lets call them what they are: fanatics) swears that they'll boycott their favorite thing, they won't. Come the next Smash, all these upset players will buy in, just like with the Pokemon fans. Fanatics have no self-control. They want what they want, and they'll get it.

Theres still money in esports itself. Smash has the most beloved cast in all of fighting games with the coffers to make this shit big. Honestly though I don't think any of this is about the money and everything to do with brand management. As much as smash players despise when we call it party game that's what it's designed as first and foremost and that's what it's mainstream brand is.
