Probably steel-framed with pre-fabricated modular units. They will not be able to create a multi-story hospital of concrete in 6 days due to cure times involved. Precast concrete is an option, though. I always am very worried that a project this size with this many people at this speed is going to be a building safety issue. They did it for the SARS outbreak so I'd be curious how that hospital fared.

Even precast concrete has forming and curing time involved unless they're re-purposing slabs and panels from other projects somehow.

There's the possibility they're using a large ratio of accelerant. I've worked with "Extra High-Early Strength" concrete mixes before that cure to 4000 psi in 3-6 hours allowing traffic back on the slabs.

Cracks like crazy, though, because of the heat coming off of it and I doubt they'd be able to use it in something structural.

If you watch the video they already did this once in 2003 during the SARS outbreak. They built a 1,000 bed hospital in 7 days. It took 7k workers. I imagine it is going to be a pretty no frills hospital but effective in its own way. As a father with young kids living in a tourist area with TONS of Chinese visitors this type of thing scares the shit out of me. I hope they lock it down before it is a huge issue.

Yup I meant in terms of premade modular precast forms that they can stack together quickly. Our firm scoffs at that high strength shit for exactly that reason. Everything built in the 70s around Chicago was similar with additives for cold weather curing which have had serious issues since construction (keeps us busy with work, though).

The big issue is this Coronavirus' potential to give you ARDS - esp in young otherwise healthy patients - you're gonna run out of vents / ECMO machines really quick if it turns into a huge pandemic. Imagine if the common cold (adenovirus, RSV, rhinovirus most common) could lead to resp failure in 5-10% of patients.

The problem with coronaviruses in general is their ability to cause ARDS in relatively healthy people who don't seek medical help until it's too late.

Not as bad as flu, but definitely worse than a common cold.

The fact that the prodrome phase is so short and incubation is so long is what makes it dangerous.
