I wonder what 1400 "severe" cases means. Are they intubated? BiPAP? Just cases requiring hospitalization?

They went to the hospital and coughed and stuff in the emergency room and were admitted for overnight observation before being discharged the next day.

As far as this season's flu outbreak here in the states, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases announced that we are at 8k deaths and 100k cases. The coronavirus is expected to outnumber this in the number of cases as there is 75k suspected in the Wuhan province alone.

I think I'm taking the opposite lesson from these flu comparisons as everyone else. Should we be trying harder to stop the flu each year? It seems to kill quite a few people.

If the difference between our bodycount from this coronavirus and the flu is basically the level of effort we put in, why do we let the flu do its thing each year?

Still, it's barely 1% infected in wuhan(? est 75k cases and 11m pop) so idk if an "economic disruption" is really a viable worry, but it seems this is harder on healthcare infrastructure than the flu? Maybe even worth considering it a greater danger than infection%/death% would imply is the hysteria surrounding it and how it would warp people's decision making when it came to utilizing healthcare vs if they thought they had the "normal" flu

A cruise liner that has been quarantined off the coast of Japan has seen 41 new cases since it entered Japan's waters.

Another 41 people on a cruise ship off the coast of Japan have tested positive for the new coronavirus, bringing the total number of cases on board to 61.

Some 3,700 people are on board the Diamond Princess, which is quarantined in Yokohama for at least two weeks.
