China reporting that coronavirus deaths have surpassed SARS.

Just got an AP alert now that the death toll is at 811.
These numbers must be from a different source because what I'm reading says there were 774 SARS deaths.

It was from the BBC link
The number of deaths in China, excluding Hong Kong, now exceeds the 349 killed on the mainland in the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (Sars) outbreak of 2002-03.

Images carried by state media showed Mr Xi wearing a mask and having his temperature checked. He was also pictured chatting to people clutching grocery bags and wearing masks outside a community center, joking that they should probably not shake hands at this "special time".
"We must have confidence that we will eventually win this battle against the epidemic," he was quoted as telling hospital workers.

China has developed an app that will warn the user if they're near someone who is confirmed or suspected of being infected with the coronavirus.
To make an inquiry users scan a Quick Response (QR) code on their smartphones using apps like the payment service Alipay or social media platform WeChat.
Once the new app is registered with a phone number, users are asked to enter their name and ID number. Every registered phone number can then be used to check the status of up to three ID numbers.
The app was jointly developed by government departments and the China Electronics Technology Group Corporation and supported by data from health and transport authorities, according to the state-run news agency Xinhua.
The Chinese government defines 'close contact' as coming near to, with no effective protection, confirmed, suspected or mild cases of the coronavirus while the person was ill, even if they were showing no symptoms at the time.
For example, all air passengers within three rows of an infected person, as well as cabin staff, are seen as being in close contact, while other passengers would be recorded as having general contact.

Also a cruise ship off Cambodia let passengers disembark who had the disease and they dispersed
An American woman who disembarked from a cruise ship in Cambodia last week has tested positive twice for the coronavirus since flying on to Malaysia, officials in that country said on Sunday.
Cambodia allowed the ship, the Westerdam, to dock after five other ports turned it away over concerns about the coronavirus.
Officials said more than 140 passengers from the ship had flown from Cambodia to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia’s capital. All but the American woman and her husband had been allowed to continue to their destinations, including airports in the United States, the Netherlands and Australia.
The woman, who is 83, and her husband, who is 85 and also an American citizen, were both hospitalized and placed in isolation. The husband tested negative for the virus, but he has pneumonia, which is often a sign of the virus.
Dr. Eyal Leshem, director of the Center for Travel Medicine and Tropical Diseases at the Sheba Medical Center in Israel, called the disclosures “extremely concerning” and said, “We may end up with three or four countries with sustained transmission of the virus.”
The Westerdam, carrying 2,257 passengers and crew, departed from Hong Kong on Feb. 1 and was at sea for nearly 14 days.
Some Americans on that cruise ship in Japan were allowed to leave and come back to the US. Only if they didn't show symptoms etc
Whoops. Turns out 14 (a t least) tested positive
Coronavirus Updates: Cruise Ship Passengers, Some Infected, Flown Back to U.S. https://nyti.ms/39DSLGg
A day before 328 Americans were to be whisked away from a contaminated cruise ship in Japan, the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo told passengers that no one infected with the new coronavirus would be allowed to board charter flights to the United States.
But those plans were hastily changed after the test results for 14 passengers came back positive — just as they were being loaded onto buses and dispatched to the airport, where two reconfigured cargo jets were waiting to fly them to military bases in California and Texas.
After consultations with health experts, the U.S. government decided to let the infected evacuees, who were not yet exhibiting symptoms, board the flights.
The reversal was the latest chaotic turn in a two-week quarantine of the ship, the Diamond Princess, that has become an epidemiological nightmare.
The infected Americans — who officials said were asymptomatic and “fit to fly” — were moved into a specialized containment area on the evacuation aircraft, where they were isolated and monitored.
All of the evacuated American cruise ship passengers, including those who have tested negative for the virus, will be placed in a further 14-day quarantine.
Those who develop symptoms or later test positive will be sent to “an appropriate location for continued isolation and care,” the State Department and the Department of Health and Human Services said in a joint statement.
A couple from my city were on that cruise and there was all this weird drama on the FB community page.
If I understand it right there were 4(?) people from my city on the ship, two of which have the same first name. One has the virus the other does not, but it was reported backwards. So the non-infected couple made this like 9 minute live video where they kept repeating they were not infected and to stop spreading rumors.
Sounds fun.
I take part of it back as I just checked Facebook.
Apparently that 9 min video was a lie the wife had made claiming they were clear and that it was the other dude. Jeebus.
Link to her initial video if you're bored:

That's wild and if she knowingly lied her community should be calling her out.
