I have plane tickets to go to Italy in a month. If it keeps spreading there no way I'm going. Not because I think I'll get sick, just dont wanna end up quarantined somehow. Shitty.

It's almost like I know something you don't.

I'll even revise my numbers. The current global rate is 3.1%. China's rate is 3.1% and has the majority of cases.

The rate is <1% in 28 countries combined, not including China.

So when those countries approach 3.1% combined on their own, call me.

I don't know why so many people are doubling down about this not being a problem in the absence of compelling evidence. We have shit tier info from China about fatality rates because their government's reports are fundamentally untrustworthy (discovered it in October, admitted it in late December, can't keep numbers straight, etc.)

Some of the quasi-hysteria is the media rediscovering how viruses work, but we can't really just draw analogy to the flu and declare it no big deal. Having a flu season twice as bad as normal would be a pretty big deal, so this is a big deal even if it is identical to the flu.

SARS fatality was about 3-4x higher, and it's the same virus family.

That's why it doesn't shine as a huge problem. In China? Sure, but given that there are 77,000+ reported cases unless the fatality count is discovered to be 5000+ or so with no change in cases there honestly isn't much to worry about.

That doesn't mean this isn't serious, but the hysteria is ridiculous.

SARS had fewer than 9k cases reported to the WHO. Coronavirus seems to be uncontained in South Korea and Japan (as well as China of course,) and we are basically ignoring the large chunks of the world where reliable reporting is not possible.

I don't think Americans have a real reason to fear coronavirus even if it gets big (iirc our SARS fatality rate was 0%), but the developing world is probably going to take a hit from this. We know it is in India, Iraq, Africa, etc. Their average health infrastructure is worse, so they are both less likely to detect it and less likely to treat it properly, resulting in a higher-but-unreported cost.

If only the Chinese in their modernized cities of 10s of millions of people washed their hands, amirite?

It's only something like 10% of the world's population under quarantine.

We have 3 confirmed cases here, two with zero signs and 3rd is. I’m working at hospital (I’m hematologist) we are ordered back to work even if we are on vacations. Also we are checking anyone who had contact or who are treating the patients in hospital. This thing isn’t acting like any virus we ever seen.

Right now the government is doing minor research to see what level if alcohol is needed in disinfectant and if stool will transmitted. God what worse the medications China etc are using to keep patient alive. Enjoy possibly going blind or deaf.

Based on the discussions I've had with pulmonologists at our hospital, they are confident that it does indeed spread from stool (plus poor hygiene, etc.) but is NOT airborne.

I'm surprised hospitals aren't straight up going the "bleach all things" route coupled with C. diff protocol.

I think I should clarify that I'm less concerned about how this will affect US and more concerned about areas that literally are not equipped to handle this. I was wrong, and think I underestimated the systems other countries have in place compared to ours.

The American health care system actively dissuades patients from seeking medical attention early. most won't go to the doctor until their sickness is severe and they've probably already spread it to several others.

understandable but not everyone has the same experience. I’ve met people who died later cause they couldn’t afford their medications or insurance. When I’m back in the US around April I’m buying cancer med for a friend cause it’s cheaper.
