They see a creature resembling Red XIII (who red may recognize as himself, judging by his reaction to it) running with others of his species (no way of knowing they're specifically his kids) through what can only be described as a desolate wasteland. We never see the ending of that scene played out in the vision, and if we had, you may recall that the final shot of that scene is a destroyed Midgar being reclaimed by nature, a potential signal of their ultimate failure to stop Meteor.

How is meteor gonna destroy the planet and leave the land as it was in the vision lol.

They also know its Red, because tattoos duh, but also afterwards they all look at Red and go "huh?". Its a stretch to say they don't recognize that dog as Red.

While not relevant,, at the end of that scene with overgrown Midgard, you hear kids playing iirc. It wasn't a sad ending lol, but there's no reason to think the crew saw that far, they likely just saw Red and kids running around in a world not destroyed by meteor. Not the best of endings but meteor was def stopped. It just isn't credulous to say they saw a future thru the whispers, yet somehow missed all the parts that show they won. Or that sephiroth is asking cloud to change the future, even though from their POV sephiroth won, according to you.

Because that scene takes place five hundred years after the ending of the original game, plenty of time for nature to start reclaiming the land after an apocalyptic event wipes out a city, assuming we're talking about the full thing that we don't know whether or not the cast saw the ending to.

There is no evidence in hat scene that Midgar wasn't destroyed and that the world wasn't damaged by Meteor. Again, it's a desolate wasteland from the point of view of the vision. This hardly begets the notion that "everything is fine". Red XIII reacting to a, by your interpretation, overwhelmingly positive vision with a response like "a glimpse into the future if we fail here today" as if they wouldn't want it to come to pass, when at that point they've only been given that specific scene, makes no sense.

From their point of view they don't even know that Sephiroth summoned Meteor to begin with. From their point of view they've seen visions of a future where a meteor collides with Midgar and they want to stop it. The current theory that I subscribe to is that Sephiroth is feeding these visions to the cast in order to have them subvert fate, as now they believe fate has ordained for Midgar and perhaps the entire planet should be hit by this meteor, due to the visions that Sephiroth fed to them. They don't know that they succeeded. They don't know that they won. They've been manipulated into believing that they failed.

Sephiroth wants this because he does know that they won, and that if the time line continues on its due course he will fail again and be killed. He wants the time line changed so that he can rewrite it as he wishes and attempt to succeed instead.

The three colored phantoms representing Tifa, Barret, and Cloud trying to prevent this from happening, aka the original post you said makes no sense, makes sense in this context because they're trying to prevent a future where they don't win. Their assess file can even back up this claim as it says something along the lines of "heroes from a distant time fighting to protect a future that they worked so hard to save" not in those exact words.

Except it's not an assumption, it has been confirmed by Squaresoft years back and is generally common knowledge.

I'll concede that there isn't enough exposition to be certain one way or the other, but I don't think this is it dawg

Kinda wild how you think a meteor the size of a moon can hit a planet, and the planet is fine hundreds of years later, with the same dog running around in the fields too lol

Fyi that shit is always life ending

And that's why it's a theory. There is no way to know what is truly fact because it'll be at least 2 years before we get the writer's intentions spelled out for us. For now all we have is hints to interpret. But the mistake most people make is injecting their own knowledge and experience into the characters, who legitimately have no way of knowing what we know. Have to look at it from the character's perspective to see what we have to work with right now as what they've seen is all they can possibly know. That is what I meant when I said meta gaming.

The size of the Meteor is well under the size of a moon. It's smaller than the city of Midgar. An apocalyptic event to be sure but not one that would destroy the entire planet forever.

Snippets of pieces of events that are hand picked out of context and fed to them in such a way that makes things look negative. Yup.

You'd have a point if we had any evidence whatsoever that they were given a full movie in their heads about the events that you're claiming, but we absolutely do not. They were given bits and pieces and they have no way of knowing all of the details that you seem to believe they do.

I also have no reason to believe sephiroth is feeding curated visions of the future to the crew but that aerith is somehow unaware of it. Don't forget the crew has as much motivation to change the future as sephiroth.

Aerith is the ancient just like Jenova, even if a half one. She's aware when there's illusions afoot, like in the presidents office. Well, maybe jenovas not an ancient, they never really finished that rewrite after changing the poor translation that Jenova was an alien

She is aware, to some extent. But she has never divulged that information to the other characters. She only starts opening up when she opens the portal and even then she's speaking mumbo jumbo about fate itself, not explicitly the events that they are trying to subvert. She mentions that Sephiroth is a great threat to the planet, but that's about as far as it gets. Some parts of her speech are also direct interpretation for the Whisperers/Planet.

Also Jenova is not a Cetra. Jenova is from another world entirely which could also explain why her 'offspring' Sephiroth has resistance against the Whisperers.

In the original she was an alien, but the translation was wonky and so it was always possible she wasn't an actual alien. She might not have come from a far away planet, but instead came from "the land".

It has been expanded upon numerous times in literature and other source material that she is indeed extra terrestrial, a parasite who conquers entire planets by subverting the population and turning them into fragments of herself.

The half ancient half cetrs thing you're talking about is a conflation of what Shinra was originally doing with Jenova after rediscovering her. They tried to create new Cetra to lead them to the promised land and eventually settled on creating what they incorrectly coined as "half Cetra hybrids", aka first Gen soldiers, because they believed Jenova was a Cetra.

Midgar is an oppressive capitalist ethnostate that segregates minorities into their own city sections below the rich and prosperous white men

How many black men did u see on your visit to Shinra tower

    That's right

counterpoint: they don't segregate them, the blax and browns just really aren't as good as the whites so their test scores are lower so they can't join SOLDIER or go to Shinra Finishing School for Cunts.
