Up to chapter 13. Battle system is great for bosses and absolutely despise it for normal encounters (I've died a fair amount to normal or minor quest encounters and have had zero problems with bosses!). My complaints pretty much echo everyone else's so far. I'd prefer either a traditional ATB system or even more actiony - this is intensely unsatisfying.

Add clamp casting. If you're going to force me to target an enemy with a move then freaking move me there so the move doesn't auto miss.

Big mechanical crane game can eat my shorts.

The more I think about it the more I actively dislike the gameplay, but the rest of it is about as good as a remake is going to get (and yes, I like the weird meta dudes). The out of combat management for example is pretty good except I should be able to favorite materia or something.

Oh yeah and don't dump me into combat with a new character without letting me reequip them...

The thing that gets me about this is they obviously thought about it too. If you lose to a boss you have the option to open up the menu by holding Square during the cutscene prior to the fight... so why not have that option to begin with or make it standard

Did you miss the square button prompts in the corner during cut-scenes? I don't remember ever being forced to use a character without equipping them first.

Actually I think it's there as standard but only for selected cutscenes.
But yeah, it's annoying, plus there's other stuff I'd improve like the weapon upgrade menu, menu being accessible directly in VR machine, etc.

100% would've preferred a list for the weapon upgrade screen instead of having to cycle through nodes 1 by 1

Right. It shouldnt even be possible for that to happen considering I can de equip them at any time- just open up the menu by default. Opening the equip menu after cutscenes is even less intrusive, considering I want to actually watch the CS!

The UI in general has some real weird decisions going on...

Could have used expanded ATB by the end of the game, Tifa and Barret are huge ATB batteries that take about 5 seconds to hit two bars. Perhaps weapons in the future will offer an extra ATB slot rather linked materia slots when upgrading to give that option of play. One thing I do like is you can get away with whatever weapon you want to play with, you don't necessarily have to default to the highest damage output to get the best experience. Just fuck nailbat tho lol.

One thing I didn't like was that I couldn't see the summary of all the benefits you were getting on a given weapon, I had to open the crystarium thing to see what I was getting lol.

I thought Nailbat was a joke weapon but I'm waiting for the video to come out that shows it critting everything for max dmg with some awesome materia combo.

Seems like every crit build weapon is just trash. There isn't a materia combo to support it.

Unless luck gives a stupid amount of crit%?

Dodge is fine it just takes some time to master but it would be wasted time because Steadfast Block materia exist. Greatly reduce damage while blocking and give me a fuck ton of ATB for it, sign me the fuck up. It should be a staple on everyones build.

Dodging is ass, whoever said parry should replace it was right on the money. Even moves you're supposed to dodge because you certainly can't block them are awkward and inconsistent so much so that just running normally is a better option. And in the event that doesn't work (looking at you Umbral Strikes) parry is the only option you have left in that you take max damage (if it can't be blocked, otherwise you take block damage + positioning advantage) but you don't get knocked down so you can heal immediately.

The best excuse for dodging is to cancel basic attack animations so you can block or just actually run away.

I have zero issues dodging Umbral Strikes with any character and this is without Parry materia, again it actually takes time to learn when the proper timing is to dodge. Don't get me wrong at first I thought the entire battle system was trash including dodging but taking a step and examining it closely is what changed everything for me and made me do a complete 180 on my opinion.

I really enjoyed the pace of the combat, but the camera needs work or they need to stop making battlefields with columns in the middle of the battleground that fuck with its positioning. Jenova fight comes to mind, a lot of my combos on Tifa were done blind cause the walls and tentacles were fucking with the camera hard.

They gotta rework summons too. Kinda sucks having to use 2 atb bars when the max is 2 in order to use leviathan abilities. It really just slows it down and makes him less useful than 1atb summons. The abilities aren't strong enough to make it worth it in comparison either. Really missed opportunity there, and I hope they rethink it in the sequels cause they only get more relevant as time goes on

My biggest complaint with the camera during battles is that the way to readjust the camera is also the button that shifts your lock-on targeting which you need to have on to make sure you don't whiff crap.

it really is the biggest flaw in the game, i wonder if messing with the auto camera adjust thing would help at all

Good thing with the battle system is that it can be adjusted to the style of the player and there is no single "Best way."

For example, I never used block, not even once (heck, forgot about its existence) at all but extensively used evade. Rarely used summons but I remember them being a game changer at times with their final attack.

And as someone said, I really liked that as a system because it felt very much like a more action version of old turn-based. So I didn't end up having the gripes about it the way I am seeing others have.
Yeah i came to post/ask if others were abusing the character switching, not only do you seem to build their atb faster (obviously) but you can also kinda bounce tank between them and get way more dmg out it seemed

Yeah I always started with tifa and her boost ability, then swapped to Barrett to do one normal attack chain, steeling, overdrive, life saver, then back to Tifa who usually has 1 more atb charge by now to start chaining combos with all the materia that help give atb.

So much fun lol. The games not perfect, but I'm pretty confident that this is the best combat system in a FF, at the very least top 3.
