I agree with this with respect to Sandra Oh and Lu Yan. It very much seems that Western ideals of Asian women has a strong "exoticism" bias with women whose Asian features are overly exaggerated. I personally think K-Pop and J-Pop stars and idols with so-called Western aesthetics are much more attractive.

It's harder for me to evaluate this with respect to Asian males though. I think part of Simu Liu's look is Westernized in the respect that he's more traditionally masculine (i.e. jockish buff) and that obviously is something Marvel wants in a Shang-Chi. It is true that he has exaggerated Asian features (single eye-lid) but I also think those features are less of a deal breaker for male celebrities in Asia (like Taeyang has single eye-lids as well). I think that a larger part of it is that Simu doesn't fit the dominant "pretty boy" aesthetic for male singer/idols, which again I think is largely a conscious thing given that he's primarily cast as an action star not a heart-throb.

Gemma Chan is fairly attractive and I think Constance Wu is beautiful, but yea the track record is not great. I think Lucy Liu is attractive, but she's not in the same percentile relative to other Asian women (she's like a 7.5 or 8 to me) as many of her white contemporaries were compared to other white women (generic white girl needing to be at least a 9 to make it in Hollywood).

Ming-na Wen was probably the most attractive Asian woman on screen in the 90s/00s.

I didn't think that guy was very attractive, and definitely not fit for a role like Shang Chi.

But I think that Ludi Lin would have fit Shang-Chu's build while also being more attractive.
