As an aside, good female characters don't have to be strong female characters. You don't ever hear discussions about "strong male characters" for that exact reason. Also strong female characters are often written in a manner that shuns or minimizes their femininity (in the classical sense), which can be fine, but actual women "strong" or not, exist on different places within the ranges of femininity.

That's exactly why my examples run the gamut from career-minded individual to working parent to retiree - they're women who are also strong characters. Emphasis on them being women is usually only used in situations highlighting how much harder they have to work because of it, most of the time it's just them as people working to make the best of things. I'm fully willing to say I didn't watch Firefly so Zoe Washington could very well be fulfilling these elements and I wouldn't know it.

I've seen several episodes of Buffy, like the one where she lets Spike fuck her in a nightclub over her protests because she's sad or something, or the one where she turns invisible so the first thing she does is go and fuck Spike. I've also seen a few of the earlier episodes where she was tortured about whether or not to fuck Angel.

Buffy's mom struck me as a much stronger character than Buffy herself, a single parent raising a daughter and an extra-dimensional magical entity who retconned reality into also being her daughter while coping with a terminal disease and all of Buffy's extraness.
