If it makes you anxious I understand, but that's also not an excuse to do the other half of your job. At a certain level, you're not just a great athlete, you're also selling the sport and brand (both the sports brand and your own). Get some press counseling like all the other big wigs get.
I dunno man. We talk all about mental health but when it comes to entertainers, suddenly we don't give a shit about mental health. I know a lot of athletes/performers are expected to be performative 24/7 given their status but I think we would've been fine if they didn't want to talk to the media for one tournament. The Grand Slam fucked up by threatening to suspend her instead of just taking the fine and letting her proceed and Osaka, being the highest paid tennis player in the league, had more leverage in that situation. They just ended up looking stupid and pissing people off and hurting their own pocket because she could not play in another Grand Slam tournament and still be fine.

Yeah the tennis org might have, or probably did, push too hard too fast, but having the current best player just wholesale say nah no thanks to any and all press conferences, and basically all off the court exposure, is terrible for their brand and bottom line, which at the end of the day is the bottom line for all their tennis players.

Imagine if the Venus Sisters just said nah to all press conferences during their height; neither them nor the sport would be in the position they are now in popularity and profit. It's mutually beneficial, and she should have consulted more people before making her decision. Now look at her, she wanted to "just be a tennis player" this one time, and instead she's now not playing at all.

Idk, just seems super short sided to know you're the top tennis player in the world, and then deny media coverage of your achievements and career. That's like...part of the gig, you can't have fame without the coverage. You don't have to appear on Cribs or something, but even post game interviews of games you know you're gonna win? Damn girl lol

Exactly what do you want from post game interviews that hasn't been said before? Those interviews are the worst the athlete is still heaving, pumped full of adrenaline, sweaty and out of breath and expected to give a full cohesive interview.

The seated ones are basically different iterations of what Ksandra said or them trying to get the athlete to pin the blame on another player for the drama.

I want the best players to play their best, not the almost best players because they know how to hold a conversation. Just seems like a weird critera.

And tbh, there's enough egotistical good sports players that have no issue being in the spotlight, so we don't have to be in fear they'll never talk.

But also, to be fair, I rarely watch those sports talk after events. It doesn't hold my interest as is. "WHY YOU LOSE." "THE BALL I WAS SUPPOSED TO RUN TO THE THING DID NOT COME TO ME SO I COULD RUN TO THE THING. NEXT TIME I CATCH BALL OK."

there is only one reason why post-game interviews should be done

because of the 1% chance of a coach meltdown

the whole idea of pro sports is for everyone to make money off the exposure of the athlete. once you purposefully start decreasing the exposure of the people you're making money off of, everyone starts making less bucks... sports leagues and networks aren't in the business of making less bucks

hell, this drama is probably making tennis money atm. aint nobody care about tennis till now

Just because you don't find it interesting doesn't mean others don't. Not every journalist brings their best questions either. Sometimes though, they are well done and insightful, and that's when they're most appreciated. This goes double when there are shenanigans happening during the game and people want comment from coaches or players after the fact.

If your problem is sweaty people talking to the press, then hold the conference a couple hours later. I'm thinking they don't do this though cause everyone wants to go home for the night, not wait around for the sports ball celebrity to shower. I know I'd want to get my interview over with versus waiting for hours after my shower lol.

UFC won’t let a fighter do a post fight interview if he got KO’ed because he might say something stupid in a brain fog and I really think most sports should follow suit

That’s really just a Joe Rogan thing and even he fails to adhere to it sometimes.

also i couldn't give less of a fuck about media obligations. if athletes wanna skip em yolo take the fine and skip em. smh at people acting so entitled to an athlete's time. if they wanna talk to the press and build their brand go nuts, if they ain't wanna say shit and just do their job i do not care.
