Right, and media appearances should not be fucking mandatory. Either way, you have not specified what "general expectations" means. Is it the public? Is it the institution? Journalists? I'm asking being Unless it's the public as a whole, the none of those are "general expectations."

Its also unfair to all the others that have to do them when Im sure many of them also hate it. I got parts of my job that I hate and give me a lot of anxiety but I still do them cause I like getting paid.

Pretty sure Osaka was the one who decided not to participate tho, but I wouldn't be surprised if they pressured her elsewhere. Again, the facts are scant and it's hard to have a strong opinion other get help for your disease and hope to see you next time. Also, maybe talk to your people and their people about expectations surrounding media appearances before hand, and not last minute and mostly in public.

If she expects to get paid by all her sponsors and the tournaments themselves, it's pretty safe to assume that doing publicity and the media obligations is part of that paycheck.

I know this may be stunning to some people, but sponsors are a bonus for people that LOVE the sport they play. Wheaties doesn't give a shit if you're speaking. They care about having a GOAT person on their box. Nike doesn't give a fuck if you're speaking. They care that a GOAT person is seen wearing their shoes. Etcetera etcetera.

Maybe they actually are mandatory based on contracts? I have no clue, all I know is this chicks disease caused her to withdraw from a competition and that sucks and maybe they should try harder to make it work and get her on the field next time

She decided not to play because it affects her ability to do the fucking thing she came there to do, the thing everyone interested in it want to see her do... Again, not all diseases are curable, and there is no guarantee that would be manageable for her. He choice not to play is SIGNIFICANLY less egregious than the requirement that she deal with shit unrelated shit that affects her this much.

My point is it shouldn't be a requirement as it has nothing to do with playing tennis.
